Workers at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport are in the midst of cleaning the charred remains of Japan Airlines’s flight JL516, and the cleanup is being livestreamed via ANN News.
On January 2, the ill-fated flight struck a Coast Guard Bombardier Dash-8 aircraft upon landing, killing 5 of the 6 passengers aboard the Coast Guard plane. Although a dog and a cat aboard the JAL plane perished, all 379 crew and passengers of the commercial flight were able to escape.
Once initial investigations were complete, workers with excavators began to remove the charred remains of the 2-year-old Airbus A350. According to Reuters, officials were still searching for the JAL plane’s voice recorder but had recovered the flight data recorder and both recorders from the Coast Guard wreck.
This is the cleanup footage that’s being broadcast via YouTube:
According to broadcaster TBS, officials say their goal is to complete the removal of the wreckage by Sunday, Jan. 7. The charred remains of the plane are all being taken to its hangar for continued inspection.
Haneda’s three other runways reopened late Tuesday, January 2. The runway where the accident happened, 34R, is expected to reopen on Jan. 8 if clearance operations go as planned, the transport minister said on Friday.
