Hotel Review: Home2 Suites – Covington, GA (Atlanta Metro Area)

by joeheg

While planning to see our friends just outside of Atlanta, we noticed that hotel prices in McDonough, GA were unusually high due to the NASCAR weekend at the nearby Atlanta Motor Speedway. Our friends suggested staying in Covington, GA, just off I-20, where we found a reasonably priced room. We managed to navigate around Atlanta’s notorious traffic by avoiding rush hours and main highways, allowing us to explore the area and even visit the city for some touristy activities (because when you’re on vacation, sometimes you want to do the touristy stuff.).

Although my wife Sharon had stayed at a Home2 Suites before, this was my first experience with the chain. Here’s a review of our stay at the Home2 Suites in Covington, GA.

I booked our hotel room with Chase Travel using the $50 statement credit from the Sapphire Preferred. Since this is a limited-service hotel, I didn’t lose any perks by not getting my Hilton Gold benefits by booking with a third-party website.

Our room was on the second floor, facing the rear of the hotel. It appears that the hotel is relatively new, as there are only a few signs of wear and tear that typically emerge as a hotel ages.

Hotel Room (Seating Area & Bed)

Since Home2 Suites is an extended-stay property, we had plenty of space for our needs. There was a seating area as you entered the room, with the bed at the rear. The room has plenty of counter space, a small closet and drawers for your items if you don’t like living out of a suitcase.

The desk area was functional with several plugs for recharging electronics. I’m not a big fan of the rolling half desk. I guess it’s OK if you don’t want to work against the wall.

The room has a curtain that separates the seating area and the bed.

Kitchenette & Bathroom

All the suites have a kitchenette, including a microwave, dishwasher and a full-size fridge. On the Home2 Suites website, I read that the front desk will supply an induction burner cooktop, at no charge, if you ask for it.

The bathroom was small but functional. The soap and shampoo were the same Gilchrist & Soames products I liked when we stayed at a Homewood Suites. The shower passed my shower test, with easy-to-understand and reach controls, sufficient light and no water leakage onto the bathroom floor.

Common Areas

The lobby has a large space with several TVs, so you can get work done during the day or watch the big game if you’re on the road and don’t want to be stuck in your room.

Home2 Suites offers complimentary breakfast to all guests. We didn’t try the breakfast but had the free coffee, which wasn’t terrible, considering it was hotel coffee.

The business center is two workstations with a basic setup.

Home2 Suites has an interesting concept called Spin2Cycle, where the hotel gym is connected to the laundry room.  At least you have to give them credit for being original.

Finally, there’s an outdoor deck with grills, plenty of seating in various configurations and a small pool area. Home2 Suites advertises that all of their pools are saline, with no chlorine or chemicals.

Final Thought

I don’t think a stay in Covington, GA is on many people’s radar when visiting Atlanta unless you’re a big Vampire Diaries fan. However, our stay at the Home2 Suites by Hilton in Covington, GA, suited our needs for this trip. The location off I-20 made it easy to navigate around the area, and the hotel’s proximity to Atlanta allowed us to explore the city as well as check out Covington and McDonough. The hotel room had ample space, and the common areas offered a variety of amenities, including a complimentary breakfast, a business center, and an outdoor deck with grills and a pool. We would definitely consider staying at a Home2 Suites property again in the future.
