Autoslash Just Fixed Its Most Annoying Flaw

by joeheg

When it comes to finding the cheapest price for rental cars, Autoslash has long been an indispensable tool in my travel toolbox. While it’s not the only way I search for low rates anymore, I always take advantage of one of their best services: price tracking.

Price Tracking

Regardless of where you book your car, you can input your rental information with Autoslash, and it will keep checking to see if a lower price shows up. If they find one, and they usually do, you’ll get an email and can rebook at a lower price. That is, of course, if you booked a cancellable rental, which I recommend under most circumstances.

The Problem With Alerts

The one issue I’ve had over the years with these alerts is that they used to include all rental companies at your location. While I’m happy to rent from the cheapest reputable company, whether it’s Avis, Dollar, or Alamo, I’m not willing to rent from a third-tier company located off-site and requiring two shuttles to get to the lot.

A New Feature That Solves the Problem

Those days are over.

I recently submitted my rental information to Autoslash. Within 30 minutes, I received an email about lower-priced options:

While this rental was cheaper than what I had booked, I wouldn’t rent from Easirent. Not only is it off-airport (with two shuttle rides required), but even Autoslash rates the company at just stars.

In the past, I would’ve kept getting alerts about Easirent’s lower prices. But I noticed something new in this email:

Offer Preferences

Autoslash now lets you set preferences for your alerts. Most importantly, you can choose which rental companies to include in your price searches.

There’s a group of settings for the major brands:

Below that is a list of just about every company imaginable. If you’re willing to rent from any on-airport company, you can add those to your search. As for me, I’m still not going to rent from Fox, Advantage, or Europcar—but Your Mileage May Vary.

Final Thoughts

This small but incredibly useful addition fixes what I always thought was Autoslash’s most annoying flaw. Now, I can get price alerts only from the companies I trust and would consider renting from.

If you use Autoslash for price tracking, check your account settings. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much better your alerts can be.

No the most annoying part of autoslash is that it does not provide instant pricing like orbitz, kayak, etc. For this reason it is pretty much useless. I’m not waiting a half hour for an email when I get the same pricing elsewhere

This feature was added sometime last year – I also appreciate it, especially for airports like MCO that are riddled with horrible third tier operators. A feature I wish they’d add to tracking though is the car category – it only alerts for the same car class as I’ve reserved, yet many times a larger or more premium car will drop in price lower than what I’ve set up. Having a choice to set up tracking for “current car class or higher” would be nice.
