Autoslash Looks For Cheaper Rental Car Prices Right Until the Last Minute

by joeheg

There’s no argument that rental car prices are through the roof…IF you’re even able to find a car. We’ve been able to find reasonable prices with Hertz, but that’s only because I’m able to use a corporate rate for my personal rentals. That’s great when I’m renting the car but it doesn’t help when Sharon’s renting a car without me.

We needed a 2 day rental in San Francisco and rates from the airport were painful to look at. I used all our tricks to find a cheap rental car and Autoslash eventually found the lowest rate, with Budget.

It’s sad when you think $185 for a 2-day rental is a good price.

I set up with Autoslash to track the rental and let us know if the price dropped. I didn’t hear anything so I ran another search last week and the lowest price was with Dollar for $214

The same rental with Budget would now cost $388. That made me happy we locked in the $185 price.

After setting up a FastBreak account to speed up the rental process, Sharon was all set.

Well, until I received an email from Autoslash a mere 8 hours before she was scheduled to rent the car. Thrifty and Dollar had lowered prices to $115 for the 2-day rental.

I texted Sharon to let her know and quickly booked the car with Priceline. I could have tried to replicate the booking with the rental car website but I’ll give Autoslash the referral for saving us $70.

I then looked to see if Budget charged a fee for cancellations. Since we didn’t prepay or have to give a credit card to hold the car, there’s no penalty for canceling, even at the last minute.

While I’ve had experience with Autoslash finding lower prices for rentals before, they were always for months or weeks ahead of time. I didn’t know that they really do keep looking right until the last minute, which is why you should use Autoslash to track every rental.
