The $1 Hack That Could Save Your Luggage Wheels — Why Didn’t We Think of This?!

by SharonKurheg

When you invest in a piece of luggage — be it a $45 bag you got on Amazon or a $450 one you bought from Tumi — you know it’s eventually going to show some wear and tear.

  • Soft-sided luggage will eventually get stained or develop rips in the fabric.
  • Hard-sided bags are going to get scratched or end up with dings.

Thank you so much, airline staff, who handle luggage.

But there’s one part of a suitcase that breaks down even when nobody “breaks” it: the wheels.

This isn’t baggage-handler damage

I don’t mean when they throw your bag and the wheel completely pops off (that happened to me once. Good times). I mean more like when you’ve been pulling your luggage from Point A to Point B a bajillion times over the course of the bag’s life and the wheel just wears out.

They can also chip from cobblestones or from running over pebbles in the street.

It doesn’t have to be that way

But get this — what if there was a way that’s super cheap and super easy to help slow down all that wear and tear on your luggage wheels?

And all it takes is a visit to the Dollar Store.

Buy some hair scrunchies

Yep, that’s all it takes.

If you slip a thick scrunchie around each wheel of your rolling luggage, it creates a protective barrier between the wheels and the rough, bumpy surfaces you roll them on.

You only have to watch the first 10 seconds of the video — the rest of it is other Dollar Tree hacks. 😉

Plus — BONUS — it also helps decrease scratches on the wheels, lowers the volume of squeaky noises, keeps your wheels cleaner from dust and dirt, and differentiates your black bag from the 100 other black bags on your flight.

And don’t worry — even with the scrunchie covering the wheel, the luggage still easily rolls on wooden floors and more difficult surfaces, like carpet.

What to buy & how to use them

Specifically look for plush, stretchy scrunchies made with velvety or foam-like material. The thicker, the better.

All you need to do is stretch one around each wheel.

Other options

Of course, not everyone wants to do things the fast, easy, and cheap way. If you’ve got a $500 piece of luggage, you may want a solution that’s worthy of said bag.

No worries; we’ve got you covered there, too.

Just check Amazon or Etsy for similar products that are specifically made for luggage wheels. Search for the keywords LUGGAGE WHEEL COVERS and you’ll have a choice of colors and materials that will cost much more than hair scrunchies, but do the exact same job.

Sadly this wheel hack stops working if you bring your luggage outside. There its just a magnet for dirty and other gross things.
