The AMEX Platinum Variant I Didn’t Know About

by joeheg

Love them or hate them, metal credit cards are here to stay.

Metal credit cards have become status symbols, and banks know it. We saw that when Chase brought back the fully metal Ritz-Carlton Card to plenty of applause. And the other Black Card has even marketed itself as the heaviest card on the market, as if that alone is supposed to make it more desirable.

I’ve always found that idea a little ridiculous.

Because what if you don’t want your wallet weighed down by a stack of metallic monsters?

If you’re like me and carry a few premium cards when you travel, the novelty wears off pretty quickly. After a while, it feels less like carrying credit cards and more like hauling gym equipment in your pocket.

That’s why I was surprised to learn that American Express has quietly been offering something very different for Platinum cardmembers.

The AMEX Platinum Variant I Didn’t Know About

Most people probably think of the Platinum Card as, well, the metal card. That’s part of the image. It’s flashy, it feels substantial, and American Express has leaned into that premium look for years.

Now there’s even more of that with the newer mirror-finish Platinum design, which somehow manages to make an already attention-grabbing card even more attention-grabbing.

And that’s exactly why the option that caught my eye is the one that goes in the opposite direction.

Instead of choosing the classic metal version or the mirror variant, cardmembers going through the replacement-card process may also see an option for an 85% recycled plastic Platinum Card. Same account, benefits. and lounge access. Just a lighter card made from recycled materials.

Why This Version Actually Makes Sense

I only carry my Platinum Card when I’m traveling, mainly for lounge access and as a backup payment card. That means it’s spending long days in my wallet while I’m walking through airports, taking trains, or wandering around a city.

And in that situation, lighter is better.

I know that probably sounds ridiculous to anyone who sees a heavy metal card as part of the appeal. But when you’re carrying several cards, hotel keys, transit passes, and everything else that comes with travel, shaving off some weight is not the worst idea in the world.

Honestly, the recycled-plastic version might be the most practical Platinum Card design that American Express offers.

It still does everything the Platinum Card is supposed to do. It just skips the part where the card itself tries to impress someone.

How To Get It

If you want to switch designs, the option appears to be available via the replacement card flow in your American Express account.

Log in, head to the card management section, request a replacement card, and you may be shown the available design options for your Platinum Card. That’s where all the metal variants and the 85% recycled plastic version show up.

It’s a small thing, but it’s one of those features that’s easy to miss unless you happen to stumble across it.

Final Thought

For years, premium cards have been in an arms race to feel more exclusive, more substantial, and, apparently, heavier.

Meanwhile, the Platinum variant I actually find most interesting is the one that dials all of that back.

So while American Express is giving people shinier ways to carry the Platinum Card, I’m more interested in the version that makes a little more practical sense. It may not turn heads when you pull it out of your wallet, but that’s kind of the point.

Would I rather carry a mirrored slab of metal or a lighter recycled-plastic card with the exact same benefits?

For once, I’m choosing function over flex.
