The Amount Of Food People Eat On a Cruise Is Staggering. 2,900 Gallons of Beer, 44,100 Bread Rolls, And Hello – All Those Ice Cream Cones!

by SharonKurheg

When people go on a cruise, it’s not unusual to indulge a little (or a lot) more than they usually would in terms of food and drink. A full breakfast followed by a 10AM martini. A pre-lunch ice cream cone. Lunch. A post-lunch ice cream cone. A frosty froufrou drink to cool you down from the hot sun. Maybe you’ll partake in a high tea or a wine tasting. A panini to tide you over until dinner. Dinner itself. Seconds on dessert. And oh, that midnight buffet! In fact, 2/3 of people on a cruise say that food and drink are the two most important factors when picking their cruise.

But have you ever wondered exactly how much all the people on a cruise ship actually consume? If you ever have, wonder no more…someone figured it out.

Admiral Travel Insurance is, you guessed it, a travel insurance company. They’re the ones who did the research (or paid someone to do the study) and figured out that a large cruise ship (figure up to 6,000 passengers) go through more food and drink in one week that you’ll probably consume in your entire life ;-).

Cruise companies stock the ship with more than 100 tons of food and drink to last the week. That will turn into about 250,000 meals (figure between 28,000 and 30,000 meals per day)

Here are some of the numbers:

2,900 gallons of beer

Imagine 105 bathtubs filled with beer. That’s how much we’re talking about.

4,454 gallons of alcohol

Increase the number of bathtubs to 169, and fill them with booze, and it gives you an idea of how much that is.

4,850 pounds of strawberries

That’s as much as all the strawberries eaten in 1 day at Wimbledon (which is also a brain exploding amount, IMHO).

5,400 lobster tails

A cruiser would have to swim the English channel 170 times to burn off the calories of 5,40 lobsters.

6,000 bottles of wine

That’s one massive hangover!

7,200 hamburgers

Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger! No Coke, Pepsi.

8,800 pounds of tomatoes

Those nearly 4.5 tons of tomatoes could make over 17,600 bowls of tomato soup.

18,723 pounds of beef

9.5 tons. We’re talking 12 cows, y’all!

18,680 hot dogs

That’ a whole lot of wieners!

19,723 pounds of chicken

They’re approximating 6,390 whole chickens. That would’ve been one big chicken coop.

21,000 ice cream cones

If stacked together, all the ice cream cones eaten on a ship in 1 week would be twice the height of the tallest building in the world

44,100 bread rolls

That’s enough rolls to feed most of the residents of North Miami Beach, Florida

46,800 eggs

If you wanted to burn off the calories of all those eggs, you’d have to walk around the ship’s running track 93,867 times. Better start now…

67,500 pastries

If you stacked them all together, they’d be 4 times the height of the Empire State Building

119,721 cups of coffee

That’s 17,103 cups of coffee per day. For 6,000 people. Some people really need to work on that coffee habit!

One Renault town carriage motorcar

Well, not really. But brownie points if you reply with the reference 😉

How much weight do people gain on a cruise?

Research says that more than 2/3 of people who have gone on a week-long cruise think they put on weight…17% say they gain 2 to 3 pounds on a cruise, 14% say they gain 4 to 5 pounds.

Fortunately, 60% of respondents say they exercise while on vacation, with more than a quarter of them (28%) actually doing more exercise than at home, either from walking more while sightseeing (that one is me, TYVM) or taking full advantage of the facilities.

Yeah that sounds about right for what I eat during a week long cruise.
