Moxy Hamburg City Review: Compact Rooms, Big Lobby, And A Practical Stay

by joeheg

Our stay at the Moxy Hamburg City was supposed to be simple. We needed a place to sleep, shower, and recover after a long travel day. After everything that happened before we finally reached Hamburg, that turned out to be exactly what we needed.

Our trip was originally scheduled to start in Hamburg. The plan was to fly to Munich, connect to Hamburg, and spend two nights in the city before continuing our trip. Since we figured we’d be jet-lagged after a long travel day, we intentionally kept our plans in Hamburg light.

That also made the Moxy Hamburg City seem like a good fit. We weren’t looking for a large room, luxury amenities, or a hotel where we’d spend hours hanging out upstairs. We needed a bed, a shower, and a reasonably priced Marriott option to get the trip started.

If you’ve followed our travel stories, we’ll skip ahead to the part where things didn’t exactly go as planned. Instead of arriving in Hamburg as scheduled, we arrived a full day late and had to take a five-hour train ride from Frankfurt to get there. We finally got to our rooms around 7:30 PM, which at least gave us time to freshen up before heading back out and then getting some well-deserved sleep.

Location

The Moxy Hamburg City is located at Anckelmannstrasse 11, 20537 Hamburg, Germany.

It’s about 2.5 km from Hamburg’s main train station, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, so getting there wasn’t a major ordeal. The closest major transit stop is Berliner Tor, which has U-Bahn and S-Bahn service and is a short walk from the hotel.

The hotel is in the area around Berliner Tor/Borgfelde, which is convenient enough from a transportation standpoint, but it isn’t what I’d consider one of Hamburg’s more interesting areas for visitors. There didn’t seem to be much immediately around the property in terms of restaurants, shops, or places you’d naturally want to wander past if your goal was to feel like you were in the middle of Hamburg.

With four of us traveling together, taxis ended up being close enough in price that we mostly went that route instead of using transit. So while the hotel worked well as a functional base, I wouldn’t pick it if your priority is stepping out the front door and already feeling like you’re in the heart of the city.

A Quick Word About Moxy

Moxy is one of Marriott’s more lifestyle-focused brands. The rooms are usually small, trendy, and designed to maximize limited space. It’s a brand we’ve come to appreciate for short stays, especially when we know we won’t be spending much time in the room.

That said, Moxy rooms are not where I’d want to spend a week. They’re often not much bigger than the bed, a small bathroom, and a fold-down desk. If you’re only staying one or two nights, that can work just fine. For a longer stay, especially with luggage, it can start to feel tight quickly.

For this stay, though, the concept made sense. We needed something simple and functional at the start of the trip, and that’s pretty much what Moxy is built for.

Lobby, Check-In & Common Areas

The Moxy aesthetic is centered around the lobby and common areas more than the guest rooms. That was definitely true at the Moxy Hamburg City.

There’s no traditional check-in desk. Instead, you’re helped by agents at the bar. That sounds more novel than it really is, since the end of the bar area still basically faces you like a front desk. It’s as much a marketing gimmick as anything else, but it does fit the brand.

This property is exactly what I think the Moxy brand represents. The rooms are compact, but the lobby is large and broken into several different zones. There were areas for larger groups, smaller groups, and solo guests. Toward the back, there was a business-style table with a Mac and printers. Toward the front, there was a foosball table. There was also a grab-and-go section near the bar.

In the morning, the same general area became the breakfast space. We weren’t originally planning around hotel breakfast, but the spread was better than expected, with both cold and hot items available.

Getting To The Room

Getting to the room started with one of the more obvious nods to Hamburg itself. The elevator is decorated to resemble a shipping container, which I assume is a reference to Hamburg’s role as one of Europe’s major port cities.

It’s a small design touch, but very on-brand for Moxy: playful, a little quirky, and loosely tied to the local area so it doesn’t feel completely random.

The Room

Once upstairs, the room was exactly what I expected from a Moxy.

It wasn’t large, but it was laid out efficiently. There was a bed, a small fold-down desk area, a wall-mounted TV, a few places to hang clothes, and not much else. That’s not so much a criticism as a description of what the brand is.

For our purposes, the room worked. We arrived late, needed to shower, sleep, and get moving the next day. In that situation, a compact room was fine. If we had planned to spend more time in the hotel, or if we were staying several nights with larger luggage, it would have felt more limiting.

Storage was minimal, which is also typical for Moxy. There were places to hang items and enough space to keep things organized for a short stay, but this is not the kind of room where you unpack fully and settle in.

Bathroom & Shower

The bathroom followed the same pattern as the rest of the room: compact but functional.

There was enough counter space for the basics, but not much more. The shower had wall-mounted dispensers with Moxy’s Muk toiletries, including conditioner and body wash.

Nothing about the bathroom felt luxurious, but it did what it needed to do. After the travel day we’d had, that was good enough.

Breakfast

Breakfast turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Since we had booked the hotel mainly as a place to crash, I wasn’t expecting much. But the breakfast setup was more substantial than I expected, with a good mix of cold and hot items.

For a hotel where the lobby has to serve as a bar, lounge, workspace, game area, and breakfast room, the setup worked well.

Final Thought

The Moxy Hamburg City did exactly what we needed it to do.

This isn’t a hotel I’d choose for spacious rooms, a charming neighborhood, or a luxury stay. The rooms are small, the immediate area around the hotel isn’t especially interesting, and the overall concept works best when you’re not planning to spend much time upstairs.

But as a short-stay hotel after a very long travel day, it worked. The lobby was well-designed, the common areas were useful, breakfast was better than expected, and the room gave us what we needed: a bed, a shower, and a place to reset before continuing the trip.

For a night or two in Hamburg, especially if you understand what the Moxy brand is and what it isn’t, the Moxy Hamburg City was a perfectly reasonable choice.
