I’ve seen a lot of crazy promotions in my time:
- The airline that gave free flights if you had a certain name
- The hotel bar that gave a discount for the type of shoes you wore
- That time when you could buy $6 flights to Hawaii
- Iberia’s crazy successful promotion of the year
But I’ve never seen one like this. An airline is offering to pay its passengers between $846 and $8,465 if they test positive for coronavirus after flying with them.
The offer from Vietjet, an airline in Vietnam, and applies to their domestic service. It’s part of their Sky Covid Care insurance policy.
The lump sum payment is available to all eligible passengers for free, regardless of their age or nationality. Eligible flights are through June 30, 2020 and claims have to be made within 30 days of the flight. Claims can be made regardless of how passengers are infected with the virus.
The airline says:
The new-age carrier Vietjet offers the SKY COVID CARE insurance with coverage ranging from 20,000,000 VND to a maximum of 200,000,000 VND for all passengers flying on domestic flights of Vietjet from March 23, 2020 to June 30, 2020.
Tens of billion dong paying for the insurance premiums are covered entirely by Vietjet with the purpose to bring passengers assurance when flying on modern and comfortable aircraft with young and professional cabin crews. The health safety of passengers and cabin crews are protected at the highest level against all risks of disease.
To be eligible for insurance coverage, passengers need to provide all information in accordance with Vietjet’s “Terms and conditions” when purchasing tickets and using aviation services; and comply with all regulations on disease prevention and control of Vietjet, the Ministry of Health and authorities.
You’re ineligible if you’ve already tested positive for coronavirus, or if you’ve breached safety regulations (such as travel bans) as outlined by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health. You also are ineligible if you have a mental illness or epilepsy.
Before boarding, you have to fill out a form that certifies you’re healthy.
