Save Money With AAA When Filling Up Your Tank

I recently received an email from AAA letting me know that I can now save five cents per gallon when filling up at a Shell station with their Fuel Rewards program. This is another way AAA is more than just roadside assistance.

I’ve been using Fuel Rewards for discounts at my local Shell station for at least two years. If you haven’t signed up for Fuel Rewards, why not? It’s free! I know this isn’t true everywhere, but the prices at Shell stations near me are comparable with other stations (except Costco and BJ’s). Up until now, I was saving six cents per gallon because of IHG’s relationship with Fuel Rewards, You saved more money the higher IHG level you were and the IHG Select card provided automatic Platinum status.

This program is ending in 2019 so unless you’re already enrolled, you’d have to meet the requirements to remain a gold member.

I’ll admit, the Fuel Rewards program is unnecessarily confusing. You get automatic Gold membership when joining, which gives you five cents off per gallon.

• New Fuel Rewards members will receive instant Gold Status for the first 6 full calendar months of their membership. For example, if you join on January 1, 2018, you will receive Gold Status through July 31, 2018.
  • The first 3 full months of your membership is your introductory period. You can try out Gold Status, no strings attached. (Ex: January 1 – April 30)
  • The second 3 months is your qualification period (Ex: May 1-July 31). You must fill up 6 times during this 3-month period to maintain your Gold Status for the next 3 months. (Ex: August 1-October 1)

So after your first three months, you’d need to fill up at least six times in three months to keep gold status. If not, you drop to silver and only save three cents per gallon until you reach six visits.

If you have AAA and link your accounts, you don’t have to visit a specific number of times to remain a gold member, meaning you’d always save five cents off per gallon.
