Former Hampton Inn & Suites Employee Sues Company & Former Boss After She Tried To Exorcise His “Demons”

by SharonKurheg

This 100% sounds like it should be a “Florida Man” story but it turns out to be out of Eastern Kentucky. Sorry, Kentucky readers – we Floridians just had to share some of the love ;-).

Jason Fields of Leslie County, Florida (oops!) Kentucky is suing his former boss and corporate employer. According to his lawsuit, he had been a front desk clerk in a Hampton Inn & Suites in Hazard, KY, working second shift since 2016. His boss, Sharon Lindon, found out he was getting a divorce and thought his marital problems were because he had demons. So she thought he needed to be cleansed.

As per the lawsuit, Lindon told Fields that she had been cleansed three or four times and it was similar to an exorcism. She said that before the cleansing, he had to fill out a questionnaire that she gave him. The form had multiple queries of a religious and/or sexual nature, such as:

Other questions on the form asked about the possibility of he, his parents or grandparents have been in any “cults,” (their words) such as Christian Scientist, Jehovah’s Witness, Unification Church, Children of Love, Buddhism, Native religions, Mormons or Islam, or if they belonged to the Freemasons, Shriners, Elks or Oddfellows.

According to the lawsuit, Fields initially did not fill out the 9-page questionnaire, but eventually did so, due to the repeated questioning of his boss. However, he never gave her the form, due to the personal nature of the questions. According to WKYT, “Fields accuses Lindon of punishing him for not participating in the questionnaire and exorcism by changing his shift [to overnight shift] and bringing in people from her ministry to pray for him while he was working. This would happen in front of the guests.” Other employees said that guests would later talk about seeing this, which Fields found embarrassing. The lawsuit also says his job duties changed, he wasn’t allowed to take his days off, he was threatened daily concerning the loss of his job, and he didn’t get a raise.

Due to what he believed were intolerable working conditions, Fields quit his job and file a lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses Lindon of religious discriminating against him because he didn’t share her beliefs. He’s seeking punitive and compensatory damages.

Hampton Inn & Suites released the following statement about the lawsuit:

We were notified Wednesday, March 27th that a lawsuit has been filed. We intend to do a thorough investigation of the accusations made within the lawsuit. As a company, we oppose all types of discrimination and await our opportunity to discuss our side. At this time we have no further comments.

And there you go. I don’t know when or if we’ll get to hear about what happens in the lawsuit, but I would hazard to make a guess. What do you think?
