Happy Wednesday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- The Short Final at Inside Flyer recently wrote an post about how to track turbulence, especially in relation to people who have a fear of flying. This kind of hit home for me in a couple of ways. We’ve written about what to do if you have a fear of flying, and how NOT to handle turbulence. But mostly because I used to work with a woman, MA, who was very, VERY afraid of flying. She took classes and everything and nothing worked. Somehow, as time went on, she was able to conquer her fear and was able to take a short flight to…wherever it was. And then a longer one to the Caribbean. And she JUST flew back from a trip to Europe, where she celebrated “a birthday that ends in a zero,” and I am so, SO flippin’ proud of her! 🙂
- First, it was the peanuts, now this. Matthew from Live And Let’s Fly reports that “wait, they were still doing this???” move, Southwest has finally stopped issuing ticket jackets. Except for the nostalgia of them, I wonder if anyone cared? I also wonder if they’ll get their own display at MCO like the peanuts did.
- Ajay from Live From A Lounge reports that the requirements to get a visa to the U.S. now include submitting your social media information to the U.S. government. With the ETIAS visa waiver that U.S. residents are going to have to get in a couple of years in order to visit several European countries (warning – lots of drama on that page and the one I wrote it links to), I wonder if that will be a requirement for us, as well?
- More restrictions were just placed on Americans going to Cuba and at this point it’s going to be almost impossible to get there legally. I’m really bummed about this one. Joe and I went to Cuba in March 2016 (reason for going: Because we could! And I was celebrating turning an age that ends in zero – I turned “that age” in Havana) and it’s a really beautiful country with lovely people. There are some political issues behind all of this, of course, and hopefully in the coming years this mistake can be reversed.
- Gary from View From The Wing reports that Hilton’s CEO doesn’t tip hotel housekeepers and why that’s probably a good thing. I personally disagree. It’s like when people from non-tipping countries come to the U.S. and don’t tip at sit-down restaurants because they think it’s just encouraging a tipping culture. My response to them is I get where they’re coming from, but until tipping laws are changed, I feel bad for these people in a service industry who are working so hard and get paid so little. The same thing goes for housekeepers. Granted, unlike servers, there’s no law that says how little housekeeping workers can be paid (short of a non-living wage minimum wage). But I know how little they get paid and I appreciate that they have to clean up my ick – it’s a nasty job and I want to show my appreciation and help. If you’re one who does tip housekeeping, and/or wants to know what a proper amount is, here’s a guide with lots of references.
- The Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge area of Disneyland is now officially open and Shawn from Miles To Memories got to visit a few days ago. Here are his 100% honest thoughts on the new land, including how he thinks some people might be disappointed. Joe and I are going to SWGE in Walt Disney World in late August – we’ll tell you how it goes. 😉
