Happy Wednesday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Joe had written a while back about the best way he’s found to get information to/from your hotel’s staff. Based on this post from Gilbert at God Save The Points, it appears that’s still the case (granted, Gilbert’s experience was with his airline, but even so…)
- It was disappointing to read how badly most cruise lines are doing with protecting the environment. But just a couple of days later I read that Carnival is going to start donating their used soap to this wonderful company that’s doing its part to make the world a better place. At least it’s something, right?
- If you’ve read YMMV for any length of time, you know that we love to do “cool stuff.” We’ve eaten dinner inside the Haunted Mansion at WDW. We went to the Pan Am Experience. Stuff like that. The TWA Hotel opened last month (perhaps a little too early – the experiences people described show why you should avoid going to a hotel right after it opens) and Joe and I have a reservation to stay there for 2 nights in December. But Ben (Lucky) just came back from his visit and his report of his visit is really awesome!
- Ben (Lucky) also wrote about the airlines that no longer allowing passengers to “document” flights. Obviously, that’s not going to be an act that will take over the aviation industry by storm. But if it did, wow, I guess this website would be out of luck, huh?
- The dust is still flying around in regards to Washington D.C. suing Marriott over its resort fees and the ridiculous things the hotel chain’s CEO, Arne Sorenson says about them ( <– thanks to Gary at View From The Wing for this play by play). Of course, Sorensen’s metaphor is way, WAY off base. But to learn a little more about the basics of the whole “resort fee” thing, check out this post (it’s about halfway down the page). Oh, and can I just ask why we can’t do like what they ruled in the U.K. is beyond me.
- Joe is an astronomy geek and usually tells me when there’s something particularly cool out there that has to do with space. I don’t know if he didn’t think this was as cool, or maybe he just missed it – anyway, *I*, for a change thought it was cool ;-). Because really, if you had the chance to see an eclipse from the sky, wouldn’t you?
- Several travel bloggers wrote about the “severe clear air” turbulence that Air Canada flight 33 experienced last week. I was particularly grateful to Jeffsetter’s post, that explained what clear-air turbulence was, since I had never heard of it before and, frankly, had no clue ;-). I’m very glad that no one had any serious injuries, but whenever I hear about severe turbulence, I can’t help but think about this post of what NOT to do during turbulence.
- Points of Arabia reports that Dubai Airport has opened a lounge dedicated to unaccompanied children. That sounds like a very wise thing to do, in this day and age where something like United putting a kid on a flight to the wrong country is a very real occurrence. I wonder if airlines will every truly go for zones for families with children on planes, if that’s where unaccompanied minors would be, as well?
