Happy Wednesday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Family Flys Free wrote about when a hotel went above and beyond to rescue a service mishap, and how a situation like that can improve brand loyalty. I agree that it can, to an extent. Except if you’re loyal to a certain brand, either because of an employee or manager who went above and beyond, or because you have status, you could wind up losing out on a much better deal simply because you want to stay loyal to a particular brand. So we make it our business to stay disloyal; it really works best for us. (to clarify – this is very much a Your Mileage May Vary situation)
- If you’ve read YMMV for any length of time, you’ll notice a trend – we’re not fans of Airbnb. Here’s why:
— The hidden cameras that’ve been found in some Airbnbs
— The risks owners and renters take by doing Airbnb
— The horrible things that have happened to Airbnb renters and owners
— The times that the FBI has had to get involved in an Airbnb issue
So does it surprise anyone that a recent Airbnb listing turned out to be in a public housing complex? - Ed at Pizza In Motion wrote about how, as a token of appreciation, Marriott gave him status he already had. At least he knows why. American gave me status last year, and gave Joe status this year and we have no idea why!
- DDG at Miles to Memories post that Uber is being sued over cancellation fees. A friend of ours had an incident where an Uber driver asked her to cancel the requested trip; doing that would have dinged her by $5 and given the driver a small kickback. The way to avoid this was to ask the driver to cancel. Well, now Uber is also charging if the driver cancels, and not as a credit card credit, but as an Uber credit. So…lawsuit!
- You may have heard that the original Louis Armstrong International Airport shut down a couple of weeks ago, as the new & improved version opened. NOLA.com wrote a very nice story of the “final things” that happened on the last night of the “old MSY.” I was especially heartened with the second-line that went through Concourse C. You really can second-line for any reason. I mean, even we did (and it was SO MUCH FUN!)!
- Brian at The Gate wrote about the trend for a 25% tip to become the new default. I suppose if they do that, it would even out with the people who give crappy tips ;-). But seriously, yeah, 25% is still an awful lot, unless it’s 100% AMAZING service, or if we’ve stayed at the table for longer than we should. But take that, on top of the surcharges some restaurants are adding to help pay for employee health care, and going out to eat could quickly become quite an expensive outing.
