I Still Might Be Able To Use My IHG Free Night Certificate

I can’t believe it, but it was only one month ago when I admitted that I was going to let an IHG free night certificate go to waste. Because of the coronavirus spreading around the world, I didn’t want to travel. With the free night due to expire, I looked back at all of the times I could have used it, but didn’t.

How things can change in a month.

Instead of it being just me who decided not to travel, now it’s almost the entire world that doesn’t want to leave their houses.

As a last-ditch effort, I messaged IHG through their website and asked if there was a chance to extend the certificate. I still haven’t heard back, but I now see that there’s hope.

John from Loyalty Lobby wrote today that:

IHG is quietly extending expiring certs by 6 months for those that call or email in. These certificates are not extended by default.

Since I’ve already sent a message to IHG about my expiring certificate, I hope that’s sufficient for them to extend it for six months. I mean, calling them seems to be a huge waste of their time considering all the people wanting to cancel plans. Also, I live in Florida and the Governor is refusing to issue an order for everyone to stay home. That means I don’t have time to sit on the phone because I have to go to work so tourists can visit our state and enjoy our beaches that are still open. #DeSantisBetrayedFlorida.

Anyway, I hope that IHG will extend my free night certificate, preventing me from wasting $50. If not, I’m OK with losing the money. Something the Florida government is, apparently, unwilling to do.

I called 2 weeks ago, the agent made a case with 7-10 days waiting period. Last Thursday I called to ask about the progress of extending my unlimited certificate, waited 10 minute, spoke to an agent who extended 6 months before it expired last weekend. It sounds like You have to call to follow up.

I was going to call but there are conflicting reports about whether that’s a good idea or not. I was resigned to lose it. I emailed them before it expired. Someone has to be the guinea pig and see if this approach worked or not. Might as well be me.
