Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far. Yes, today is Sunday. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- It’s interesting to see how banks are dealing with this new business environment. Early on, I wondered what would become of the AMEX RAT department. Well, we know they’re not gone as they’ve been shutting down accounts of people who were refunded their airline incidental credits after their flights were canceled.
- For those aviation geeks who like to look at FlightRadar 24, there’ve been some interesting flight plans over the past few months. On Wandering Aramean, Seth writes about a pilot who went on a flight around New York that would otherwise be impossible. I thought our detour we took one time when flying to LaGuardia was impressive but it’s nothing like this.
- It’s looking like banks are needing to keep good customers and willing to give out retention offers if necessary. It seems that Chase wants to limit these offers to those who are really going to cancel. Reports say so you might need to get right up to the end of the process before the retention offer pops up to the representative.
- On God Save The Points, Gilbert breaks it to everyone that Munich is canceling Oktoberfest 2020. While we loved our few days in Munich, there are several less appealing things to me right now that sitting in a crowded beer hall for hours on end drinking beer. With the postponement of the Summer Olympics and cancellations of South by Southwest and San Diego Comic-Con, I’d be doubtful of any large scale events scheduled for the rest of 2020.
- It’s my opinion that the travel landscape is never going to be the same. The first wave is going to about the economy, where locations already in financial hardship will close their doors and never reopen. This week The Maxwell in New York City closed its doors permanently. Opened in 1930 and renovated in 2009, it was a member of the Marriott Bonvoy Tribute Hotel brand. Located on Lexington Ave. in Midtown Manhattan, I doubt it will stay closed forever but there’s no rush for someone else to pick it up right away. In the same vein, there’s not much hurry to reopen the Waldorf=Astoria either.
- Just because you’re disinfecting planes or checking passenger temperatures while wearing your PPE, doesn’t mean you still can’t have some style. AirAsia managed to get designer fashion PPE for their crew to wear on a repatriation flight from the Philipines to Thailand.
- Finally, I wanted to bring to your attention a post from Richard Kerr as part of his “The Critical Points” series on TPG. If you just want to follow his posts and not the rest of the site, you can bookmark this page. Richard always has an interesting take on things and agree with him or not, his opinions are always thought out. This post talks about how we can look at people’s lack of patience with the current situation and what that means about how we’re going to react to future challenges. While this is one of the biggest hurdles for us, many people are starting to come to grips with this reality and changing their behaviors accordingly.
