The Race For The Worst Credit Card Offer Has Officially Begun

by joeheg

My spam email filter is typically pretty efficient. It works so well that I’ll go and check every week or so just to see if something important ended up in there. However, this email made it through the filter. I guess my computer knows I’m interested in any emails about signing up for a credit card,  no matter how bad the offer.

Let me introduce you to the Surge Card.

With a shaky economy and 30 million Americans filing for unemployment since mid-March, there are going to be people out there who need credit. The Surge card is there for you, no matter how bad your credit is.

Just look at these benefits!

They’ll report to all three credit bureaus, and you’ll get a credit limit of $500. Wow, they’re so nice.

Why Choose the Surge Card?

If you have poor credit and are trying to improve your credit score, using a credit card responsibly may help. The Surge Mastercard will report your payment activity to the three major credit bureaus on a monthly basis. Maintaining a low balance and paying your bill on time every month are two of the best practices for positive credit.

Amazingly, everything they said in that paragraph is true. You have to dig into the terms of the card to see the true colors of the Surge card.

  • $125 Annual Fee the first year, then $96 annually.
  • After 12 months, you’ll pay an additional $10 per month maintenance fee.

And you might not even be eligible for this great offer.

All applications are reviewed for an unsecured product; but may be approved for a card with a $50, $100, $150 or $500 refundable security deposit based on creditworthiness.

The Surge Mastercard is issued by Celtic Bank. Don’t look for the card on their homepage as there’s no mention of it. You have to a more in-depth search to see that Celtic Bank offers a range of cards taking advantage of people with less than perfect credit.

I can’t believe they’re missing out on the cross-marketing opportunity and don’t offer a 12 pack of Surge soda as a signup bonus.

You should at least get something for your $125 annual-fee.

Final Thoughts

Opportunistic lenders looking for people down on their luck isn’t anything new. They’re just more blatant with their advertising when times are bad. I give the Surge card credit, as they lay claim to the “FIRST!” title for this economic downturn.
