Trip Review: Mount Bromo, Java, Indonesia

a mountain range with smoke coming out of the ground

This was originally the beginning of a series of posts I’m affectionately calling, “The really cool places around the world that my dad and his wife have visited.” I’m now calling them places we’d all like to be able to visit when all of this is over.

Being retired, they have no restrictions on time, and since I’m able to help them book trips using points and miles, the list of places they can travel to is pretty incredible.

One of the freedoms they have (that I don’t) is the ability to travel to out of the way locations. When Sharon and I travel for a week, we have to limit ourselves to a few destinations each trip. When Dad and his wife travel for a month, they can take a day to fly to a location, stay for two nights and then fly somewhere else. We don’t have that luxury of time, but I’m starting to think it might make sense to build excursions like these into our trips.

Mount Bromo is one location my dad visited on his last trip to Indonesia and Thailand. It’s a volcano located on Java and I’d never heard of it before I saw their trip plans. I wish I never saw their pictures because now I really want to go there.

Travel

The easiest way to get to Mount Bromo is to fly into the nearby Surabaya airport. Since they were coming from Pangkalan Bun, they arrived by taking a non-stop flight on local carrier Nam Air.

For accommodations, they stayed at the Jiwa Jawa Resort Bromo. Sorry, there’s no chain hotels available in the area.

The hotel offered some amazing views from the exterior deck.

But the selling point is its proximity to Mount Bromo. They had a full day to explore the town’s museums and made a trip to the volcano during the day. The vista was spectacular.

That’s nothing comparing to when they got up really, really early the next morning and went to see the sunrise.

From there, they returned to the hotel for breakfast and then off the airport. They flew to Bali on Garuda Indonesia. Bali served as their home base for their entire trip to Indonesia.

In all, they only spent two days at Mount Bromo and parts of two days traveling there and back. That’s a significant time investment for a short stay. However, you have to admit those are some awesome pictures and they think it was well worth the trip.
