Small Update re: JetBlue 2021 U.K. Expansion

by SharonKurheg

When JetBlue announced in 2019 that they planned to begin flying from New York JFK and Boston Logan into London in 2021, it drummed up a lot of excitement. After all, they were recently ranked the second best long haul airline in the U.S. But another airline, a low cost one, at that, going across the pond is, of course, always a good thing.

We wrote last month that JetBlue’s CEO, Robin Hayes, said during the airline’s Q1 earnings call that due to the COVID crisis, the 2021 expansion into the U.K. was still going to happen but would be delayed into later in 2021. Date unknown.

There’s now a small update.

Joanna Geraghty, COO and President of JetBlue spoke at a webinar sponsored by the World Aviation Festival last week. Of the expansion she said:

“Our plans have definitely been delayed somewhat, but we’re still looking at a launch next year. We’re very excited about that.”

Geraghty continued:

“There are so many great opportunities for JetBlue as you start to bring our model across the Atlantic … it’s very expensive to fly from New York to London from Boston to London. We think we can bring the same great JetBlue experience we’ve brought to the West Coast of the United States to Europe, and do it for less money and a higher level of service, and with a fantastic product.”

The one question on everyone’s mind is which airport JetBlue would use in London. That had yet to be announced, and apparently it will remain a secret. Said Geraghty:

“We have not chosen an airport yet. I think that’s actually been a really great decision to hold off and wait, because our focus is on the right airport at the right cost and making sure that it fits our model.”

The JetBlue COO & President confirmed once again that A321s would be the planes of choice to make the transatlantic flights, even though they’re narrower than most planes that cross the ocean:

“I think that the narrow-body might actually give customers a bit more comfort. There’s less people actually on board the aircraft. I’m confident that the narrow-body experience will be almost like a private jet experience … it’s a much more private experience than you would get on a wide-body.”

I guess we’ll just keep on waiting for the next announcement.
