Happy Monday to all of our travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- One of the most overlooked services pre-COVID-19 to protect your travel from delays was Freebird. For a small $19 fee, they’d rebook you on any available flight if your trip was delayed by more than 4 hours (or overnight). We paid the money when we book a cheap flight on Frontier from Orlando to Austin. As one of the things likely to fly under the radar while people aren’t traveling due to the pandemic, Richard Kerr wrote that TPG that Freebird was scooped up by Capital One. The former website is no longer working. What do they plan to do with it? Offer the service for free for customers booking a flight with their Capital One card? Or do they plan on offering the service for the fee but only to their customers? To be continued.
- One of the ways I search for hotel rooms is by using TripAdvisor. I know how the system works and can sort through reviews to find the ones that are important. One thing I didn’t like when using the website, or any hotel website, was the popup from the website Roomkey that showed up for any search. It would be hours or even days before I noticed this stealth browser window was still open. Worry no more, Roomkey is another victim of COVID-19 as the decrease in hotel searches killed its business model.
- Before coronavirus, Sharon and I would travel around the country to see concerts. We went to Desert Trip to see The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney and we flew to New York to see The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac at Citi Field. At the end of 2018, we traveled to Chicago to see Phil Collins and stayed at the Kimpton Gray. With movie theaters opening at different times around the US (and the world), people are now flying to cities just to see a movie in a theater, like they’re doing to see the new Christopher Nolan movie, Tenet.
- Hidden city ticketing has been around for a while. I wrote about how you can use the method to save money and why we choose not to do it. Leave it to American Airlines to go after a customer during a pandemic who they felt took advantage of them for the fare differences they think they are owed. American Airlines shows how not to act when you’re hemorrhaging cash!!!!
- People like to feel at home when traveling. Whether that means unpacking all of your things when you get to your room or even traveling with your own pillow, to each their own. I remember a time when my family set off a theft alarm by moving a tv across the room so we could see it from the bed (there was a sensor that alerted the front desk when it was unplugged.) Must have been a great hotel in Memphis, TN where this was a big problem for them. It turns out that during the global pandemic, people are doing more than moving the TV. Brian wrote on The Gate about the new problem of guests totally remodeling their hotel rooms during their stay.
