The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has been in the planning stages since 2012. Run by the people who bring us the Academy Awards, this museum in Los Angeles will feature iconic items from the Academy’s extensive collection. Think of the Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz and the headpiece of the creature from the original Alien movie. It sounds like the museum is going to be a mixture of the Filmmuseum in Frankfurt and MoPOP in Seattle.
Now that the museum has set an opening date of April 30, 2021, they are releasing more information about the permanent and temporary exhibits.
The first temporary installation will feature the Academy Award-winning Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki.
Curated by the museum’s Exhibitions Curator Jessica Niebel and Assistant Curator J. Raúl Guzmán and organized in collaboration with Japan’s Studio Ghibli, which Miyazaki co-founded in 1985, Hayao Miyazaki features more than 300 objects, including original imageboards, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds, posters, and cels from Studio Ghibli’s archives—including pieces on public view outside of Japan for the first time.
Reading about the exhibit, it sounds like it will be much more than a room of displays with cards telling about the items. If our visit to the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo is any indication, this will be a full experience. It’s in Tokyo where you can jump inside a lifesize Catbus. It used to be just for kids but they have now built one for adults as well.
For one, I’m really hoping to get to see this in person. While the museum in Tokyo was great, many of the explanations and history were in Japanese. Sure there was plenty of English around so we knew what everything was, but it did feel like we were missing out. We’d have no such problem seeing the same items in Los Angeles.
May 2021 feels like it’s so far away. Our perception of the passage of time is out of whack. I can’t think about next summer right now, I’m just trying to get to the weekend.
