One big advantage of using Lyft is the ability to triple dip when earning points for your rides. You’re able to earn bonus points from your credit card, including earning 10X points when using your Sapphire Reserve card until March 2022.
While earning 10x points is a great return, Lyft made things even more lucrative by letting you earn airline miles and hotel points with each ride.
Until now, you could link your Delta SkyMiles and Hilton Honors accounts and earn bonuses in each of them for every trip.
- Delta SkyMiles members earn 2 miles per $1 on airport rides and 1 mile per $1 on all other rides in the US.
- Hilton Honors members earn up to 3 points per $1 on rides.
As of July 1, 2021, Lyft will only allow you to earn bonus points with one of its partners.
Today, June 30th, is the last day for you to choose which program you want to credit your rides.
While I think a SkyMile is worth more than an Honors point, I’d be earning 3x more points with Hilton for everything except airport rides.
So while you need to choose which program you want to be the primary one for earning, you can change your preference at any time in the Lyft app in the Rewards tab. This means you can set it to earn Honors points but change to Delta SkyMiles for trips to and from the airport if you want.
Most importantly, you won’t stop earning bonus miles if you don’t select a preference before today. Lyft will automatically default to earn points with the program you enrolled in first.
Once the COVID waivers end, it might be worthwhile to consider that Hilton Honors points expire with no account activity within 12 months, and crediting a Lyft ride will extend your points for another year. That’s another reason to consider choosing Hilton points instead of Delta as your default setting.
