We’re Using Lyft Black More Often, & Not Because We’re Bougie

by joeheg

One thing we’ve noticed since we’re traveling more is that prices for ride-sharing services are through the roof. A combination of fewer drivers and increased fuel prices causing decreased interest for drivers to pick up additional rides puts riders at the short end of the equation.

The rates for base Lyft rides have gone up so much that the price for Lyft Black is LOWER. This means you can ride in a luxury car for the same price or even less than a ride in a Nissan Sentra.

While we thought this phenomenon was unique to New York City, we saw the same dynamic in New Orleans. We got a ride to the Freddie Awards in an Infinity QX60 for the same price as a base Lyft (which was honestly an attempt to be a bit of a baller) and our ride to the airport in a QX80 only cost an additional $5.

We don’t mind taking a Lyft when necessary but the vehicles and drivers you meet are a mixed bag. You’ll meet really nice drivers who are trying to make a few extra bucks with cars that just meet standards. Some cars are nice but the drivers aren’t the best. Finally, to be honest, you’ll occasionally have a ride where you just hope you’ll get to your destination without the car falling apart or the driver falling asleep at the wheel.

We’ve never had a problem with the vehicle or driver when using Lyft Black (or Uber Black.) If it’s a less expensive option or even if it’s only a few bucks more, I’ll pay for the upgrade. I’m not going to pay double the fare to ride in a Ford Expedition or Land Rover. If that makes us bougie, I’ll take the name if the shoe fits.
