3 Types Of People Who Probably Won’t Like Virgin Voyages

Full disclosure. Although we work hard to keep things relatively G-rated here at Your Mileage May Vary, both Joe and I tend to have potty mouths in real life. What’s more, I’ll be the first to admit that although he held his own even before we got married, Joe got most of that particular habit from me.

Don’t get me wrong – we can both turn our respective S- and F-bombs on and off like a faucet. But the fact that we both curse like sailors when the need arises? Well, it is what it is.

On that note, I distinctly remember being somewhere in public once – I think it was at a beach – and for whatever reason, the term “holy s**t!” came out of my mouth. It may or may not have been all that quietly, either. With that, the woman next to me was apparently not pleased, and gave me the stink eye for the next 10 minutes.

Anyway, a friend of mine is currently on a Virgin Voyage cruise – their first on this cruise line. So I’ve been giving them a lot of advice over the past couple of days:

• 36 things Virgin Voyages doesn’t tell you about their cruises
• Their current status match program and upcoming loyalty program
• The fishing excursion they offer on Bimini (because NO ONE writes about it LOL!)
• A place on the ship they’ll probably want to avoid

For whatever reason, maybe because it’s been so cold here in Central FL and I was trying to think warm thoughts? I dunno, I starting thinking how Virgin Voyages cruise is not for everyone. I mean, it’s certainly not for the lady who gave me side eye at the beach. But other people too. Like these…

People who run more conservative flavored

I don’t necessarily mean Republicans, just those who are more socially conservative.

• Those who are not fans of adult language
  Virgin Voyages is adults only; strictly age 18+. Adults sometimes use adult language. And some of those adults may revel in having a potty mouth without worrying about kids hearing their F-bombs. I also heard more than one crew member use some blue language here and there (yes, to an extent, they’re allowed). And let’s not even get into what words you may hear at the drag queen show. Which, not surprisingly brings us to…
• Those who don’t support equality and inclusivity
  Virgin Voyages is for everyone, period, with no judgment. Guests and crew may be straight, gay, or transgender. Couples may be interracial. They may be pineapple people. You’ll probably see people of the same sex holding hands or kissing, right next to the straight couples doing the exact same things. Again, no judgement.
• People who are not comfortable with sexual concepts
  Once again, Virgin Voyages is for adults. Many adults are interested in things having to do with sex. And Virgin prides itself on being just a little bit naughty. So there are things as relatively innocent as an ice cream shop called “Lick Me Till Ice Cream,” to a show called “Never Sleep Alone,” which is presented as a sex and dating show hosted by a sex therapist. There are also all kinds of innuendos mentioned by The Diva, the ship’s aforementioned resident drag queen. Depending on the weather, there will be most likely be woman at the pool who are only wearing pasties, and potential some women wearing even less than that. They also sell intimacy kits in one of the onboard shops (I don’t think you’re going to find those on Holland America).

In other words, Virgin Voyages would most likely be more enjoyed more by those who are generally more open-minded, rather than those who are not comfortable with adult language, lifestyles that are different from theirs, and overall sexual concepts.

Picky eaters

When my friend and I went to Test Kitchen, one of the more unique restaurants on our Virgin Voyages cruise in November, we were seated next to two women who didn’t appear to have a lot of experience with “experiential” meals. One questioned what caviar was, and went on and on about how many hamburgers she had wound up eating during the cruise, because she didn’t like the “interesting” foods they had at the restaurants.

Virgin doesn’t really cater to people who only like “meat and potatoes” or “chicken fingers and french fries.” I mean, one of their restaurants, Razzle Dazzle, is veggie forward (that means there are few meat dishes on the menu). And their Mexican and Italian restaurants are legit, without a chimichanga or chicken parm to be seen.

Unless you’re planning on eating pizza and burgers for the whole trip, picky eaters may not find enough variety to keep them happy.

People who like structure on their cruises

Lots of cruise lines do everything for you.

You let most cruises know know if you’d rather have the earlier or late seating for dinner, and if you want to pay an upcharge for the “special” restaurant. After that, they tell you your meal schedule, as you go from restaurant to restaurant at your specified time, seated with the same 4 or 6 people who you don’t know, whether you like them or not.

Virgin Voyages lets you make a reservation for whatever time you want, at whichever restaurants you want, for no upcharge (save for a few optional things on the menu that night), and you sit with your party (or not, if you prefer).

There’s a whole, long list of activities every day.

Virgin Voyages has a handful of activities, but otherwise you can just do your own thing. In fact, exploration is purposely part of the shipboard experience.

In other words, if you prefer your days on a cruise ship to be structured, once again, Virgin Voyages may not be for you.
