“Everything Everywhere” Director Bought His Oscars Tux at Lost Luggage Store

by SharonKurheg

I’ve never been one to fawn over famous people. By the time I was in my early 20s, I realized they were the same as you and me and just because some people thought they were “important” didn’t mean they actually were that much of a big deal.

That being said, any time I see a celebrity acting like one of us, and not as if they’re better than everybody else, they get more of my respect.

Case in point…

Say you’re one of the elite and were going to a fancy schmancy event. The Tonys. the Oscars. The Met Gala. Most people would get something mondo expensive and fancy to wear. A dress made by a famous designer. Diamonds. I mean, Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe’s famous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress.

And then you have Daniel Scheinert. A director of shorts, TV shows and music videos since the 2010s, he made his full length movie directorial debut in 2016, with Swiss Army Man, which starred Daniel Radcliffe. That was followed by The Death of Dick Long in 2019 and Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia in 2020.

And then came Everything Everywhere All At Once, which won Best Motion Picture of The Year, Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actor (OMG, I was SO HAPPY for Ke Huy Quan! WTG, Short Round!), Best Supporting Actress (WTG Baroness Jamie Lee Curtis!) and Best Film Editing.

The film also won Best Original Screenplay AND Best Director. Both of those awards were shared by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

By the way, that tuxedo Scheinert wore – you know where he got it? It wasn’t Gucci or Ralph Lauren or Prada. Nope, he got it at the giant store in Alabama that sells peoples’ lost luggage.

No, really!

Unclaimed Baggage has been around for more than 50 years. Scheinert grew up in Birmingham AL, which is just 2 hours from Scottsboro, the location of the lost luggage store. According to Scheinert’s mom, Becky, “Years ago, Daniel bought an old tux at the Unclaimed Baggage Center. He found that the suit fit him perfectly — Daniel is tall and thin, but it was a perfect match,” said Becky. And when Everything Everywhere was nominated, “Daniel figured that he would wear it to the Oscars.”

Unpretentious to the MAX!

From Unclaimed Baggage’s Instagram feed:

Oh, and his shoes?  They were made by a cobbler who gets his material from old tires. 😉

So anyway, if you lost a suitcase with a black tuxedo in it over the past few years, who knows, it may have been at the Oscars not long ago! 😉

And YAY for a famous director acting like “one of us!”

Seems hard to believe. I’ve been to that “non-giant” store many times and the vast majority of clothing is junk. Worn out polo shirts, beach wear, etc. The only reason I would believe this is that he is from Alabama so I guess it’s possible.
