Emirates Introduces New Option for Check-In & Bag Drop

by SharonKurheg

When airlines introduce new procedures, or even new options for procedures, it’s rarely in the passengers’ interests. Cases in point:

However Emirates just introduced a new option for checking and dropping off bags that, yes, will save them money but will also make getting to the airport a lot easier.

Why? Because you’ll be able to check in and drop off your bags, off site, up to 24 hours before take off.

On April 27th, Emirates Airline launched its new City Check-in and Travel Store. It’s in the heart of Dubai’s financial district and is said it’s being done in an effort to make travel more convenient.

The store is located in ICD Brookfield Place in Dubai International Financial Centre (a.k.a. DIFC), about 15 minutes from the airport by car, or about 30 minutes by public transportation.

Travelers can hand over their luggage every day between 8am and 10pm, as long as it’s between four and 24 hours before their flight. Emirates says this will help passengers in a few ways:

  • They don’t have to drag their bags to the airport
  • Crowding at the airport will be decreased
  • They can spend spend less time at the airport, since they don’t have to account for time spent in a check-in line and dropping off bags.
  • Passengers will also be able to book future travel at the kiosks
Passengers can check daily between 8am to 10pm, where they can take advantage of self check-in kiosks, either at dedicated desks with Emirates agents, or with the help of the world’s first check‑in robot assistant, which is named Sara. As described in UAE National news, Sara is a portable cyber check-in system that has the ability to match passengers’ faces with their scanned passports, check passengers in and guide them to the luggage drop area (which is the “a-ha!” moment – Sara is how Emirates might be able to use robots instead of human agents in the future – a money saver for them).

Emirates already has similar (albeit Sara-less) off-site check-in service at Ajman Central Bus Terminal, in Dubai, as well as home-check in services in Dubai and Sharjah, where agents come collect bags at a home or hotel.
Although both Easyjet and Air France allow some passengers at some airports to drop off their bags the night before their flights, those services are at airports. Emirates is still the first airlines that lets you do bag drop off-site.
