The year is coming to a close, and if you’ve been working hard to earn hotel status, you may be thinking about doing something called a “mattress run.” That just means staying at a hotel for the sole purpose of earning status. If you already have hotel status, you may be worried about losing it at the end of the year. But don’t worry too much – most hotel programs give you some time at the beginning of the new year to keep using your status before downgrading you to a lower level.
If you have a special status at a hotel because of your credit card, all you have to do to keep it is to keep your card and pay the yearly fee. However, if you got your status by staying a certain number of nights at the hotel or spending a certain amount of money on a co-branded credit card, you must make sure you meet the requirements by the end of the year. After January 1st, your progress towards status will go back to zero, and you’ll have to start all over again.
Below are the dates when the status levels of each hotel program are reset.
Hilton Honors
If you were unable to maintain your elite status with the Hilton Honors program, you would still keep your status until the end of March of the following year. This means you get an additional three months to enjoy the benefits of your higher status level. However, it’s important to note that this extra time does not count towards requalifying for the status. The deadline for requalification remains December 31st.
World of Hyatt
Hyatt’s elite status is reset at the end of February each year. If you did not manage to qualify for status in 2023, you’ll maintain the same elite perks until the end of February 2024. After that, your status will change to whichever level you earned in 2023.
IHG One Rewards
Your IHG One Rewards status is valid till the end of December. If you did not meet the eligibility criteria to maintain your status in 2023, your elite status will change to whichever level you earned on January 1, 2024.
Marriott Bonvoy
If you’re a member of Marriott Bonvoy, the status you earned in 2022 is valid until the end of February 2024 unless you earn that status again in 2023. But, after February 2024, your status will expire unless you qualify for it again in the following year.
Wyndham Rewards
Wyndham elite status resets on January 1st, the third year from qualifying for status. If that’s confusing, it means you’ll retain your status for the year you earn it and the entire following year. If you do not requalify, your elite status ends on January 1st.
Choice Privileges
Choice doesn’t have clear info on its website, but it states you need to requalify for status each calendar year. This leads me to think the status resets on January 1st.
Best Western Rewards
Best Western Rewards has been extending status to current members, so it’s hard to determine when status levels reset. The current elite status appears to be good until March 31st of the following year.
Final Thoughts
While some loyalty programs may reset elite status on January 1st, the majority of programs offer a grace period until at least February or March of the following year. During this time, the programs update their systems and may provide members with the opportunity to maintain their status through a challenge or by purchasing an upgrade.
