How A Hotel Snagged Their 7-Star Rating

by SharonKurheg

The best of the best. That’s what usually comes to mind when you think of luxury hotels that have the best ratings. Everything about those hotels – the property, service and amenities – all go “above and beyond.”

The rating of hotels generally goes up to 5 stars. That system started in 1958, when Mobil (they of oil and gas) started funding a project that paid anonymous assessors to review restaurants, spas and, yep, hotels. They developed the results into a five-star rating system, and that’s how the Mobil Travel Guide, published by Simon & Schuster, started.

However, when the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai opened in 1999, it unofficially got a 7-star rating when a British reporter visited the hotel during a press trip. She was so impressed with the hotel that she described it as a 7-star experience. Although the hotel never used or encouraged the quote itself, the complementary description stuck and the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is still called a 7-star hotel in many circles.

Here’s some history and fun facts about the hotel:

Frankly, personally, I don’t think I would want to stay at the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. I’m sure the hotel would be lovely, but something like that – SO fancy – is simply not my style.

Plus, let’s face it, Joe and I aren’t rich – we can travel as we do, and sometimes stay at nice places or fly first class because of his hobby with points and miles. And although Your Mileage May Vary, this place is, in my humble opinion, expensive. The least expensive I see it is $1021 per night for the smallest suite (a mere 170m2 or 1830sq ft) in the summer. In Dubai. Dubai in the summer. Yeah. Prices reportedly go upwards to about $30K per night for their Royal Suite during a more desirable time of the year, when you won’t feel like you’re burning in an oven. But really, do you know how many vacations we could go on for $30,000???

Here’s the hotel’s website if you want any more info about it.

So how about you? Would you want to stay at the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah? Why or why not?
