Loyalty Members Can Save Money on New/Renewed Passport

by SharonKurheg

Credit card companies don’t reimburse for passports. And that’s a shame because in the United States, a new passport for an adult costs $130 for the application fee and $35 for an execution (acceptance) fee, for a total of $165. If you’re getting a renewal, you only have to pay the $130 application fee. Prices for children under 16 are slightly less, at $100 application for the renewal fee (execution fee is still $35).

However another requirement for getting a passport is to submit a passport photo. There are a lot of rules for that picture, to the point that the State Department has a whole page of Dos and Don’t for passport photos, that even includes videos.

You CAN take the photo by yourself, but the State Dep’t recommends against doing a selfie “because they are often the incorrect size and have the wrong head position for passport photos.” Some apps can take a passport photo, but honestly, bunches of people go to places that take passport photos as an everyday occurrence. Their employees know the requirements for passport photos, and they have the equipment and lighting to make it happen.

Staples is one of those places. And to help kick off the newest version of their loyalty program, called Easy Rewards, they’re offering free passport photos to those Easy Rewards members this Thursday, February 29th. From Staples:

To celebrate the launch of the new Easy Rewards program and to show appreciation for our most valued customers, Staples is offering the following incredible Leap Day deals for Easy Rewards members, only valid on February 29, 2024.

  • 29,000 free passport photos nationwide1 – just in time for spring break travel plans and beyond.
  • Earn 29x points when you spend $29 or more in store and at Staples.com. This includes thousands of products and services including Laptops, Printers, Apple® Products, Luggage, and Custom Print orders!

1The free photo is valid in Staples® U.S. stores only on select passport photos. Limit 1. Excludes any digital passport photo options. Coupon only available on the Staples Deals & Shopping mobile app and must be presented at checkout. While supplies last. May not be valid in combination with other coupons. Limit one coupon per customer, nontransferable. Offer is subject to change or cancellation at any time. Not valid on Instacart orders, prior purchases or purchases made with Staples Advantage In-store Purchase Program. No cash/credit back. Coupon value applied pre-tax. One-time use only. Redeemed coupons cannot be made available for reuse. Expires 2/29/24.

Staples’ website lists 2 physical passports at $17.99. You only need to submit one passport photo to the State Dep’t, so we’re assuming they’re only going to give you 1 photo, which would have a value of just shy of $9.
