Aman Resorts Launches Janu – A More Affordable Sister Brand

by joeheg

Aman Resorts is a luxury hotel brand with properties in some of the world’s most exclusive and exotic destinations. The brand is renowned for its minimalist design, serene and secluded locations, and unparalleled service. A typical Aman guest values privacy, exclusivity, and personalized attention. They’re usually high-net-worth individuals seeking a peaceful retreat and a break from their hectic lives. You won’t see much bling at an Aman resort.

Aman has established a devoted following among guests who value the brand’s consistent excellence and high-quality offerings. Aman Resorts are designed to meet the needs of customers who demand the best in terms of accommodations, amenities and service, and are willing to pay for it.

While there’s a significant market for Aman Resorts offerings, I’m sure they know there’s a larger market just below the ultra-lux clientele. These are the people who know about Aman but aren’t able or willing to pay the cost to stay at one of their properties.

That’s most likely the reason that Aman has developed a more affordable “sister” brand named Janu, which just opened its first resort in Tokyo

What is Janu?

Janu, derived from the Sanskrit word for ‘soul,’ is a visionary hotel, residence and lifestyle brand designed to encourage moments of social connection and collective joy.

Janu is born from the successes of its legendary and pioneering sibling, Aman, with a mission to redefine luxury hospitality, enhance lives through enriching experiences, and celebrate genuine human interaction.

In their own words, Janu is a brand that builds on the Aman model. Instead of focusing on seclusion and service, it is more about being a luxury hospitality location committed to providing a more dynamic, sociable experience.

Based on what I’ve read, Aman shines when you visit its most secluded locations. You’re in another world where everything is taken care of, and the staff seem to know what you need before you ask. The only locations that seem to be underwhelming are the locations in large cities. While it’s nice to stay at an Aman in Tokyo or New York City, it’s not the same experience as visiting the properties in Thailand, Cambodia or even the desert of Utah.

Where will Janu Resorts be located?

The first Janu property just opened in Toyko, Japan. The Janu Tokyo has 122 rooms and suites located in the Residence A Tower of the Azabudai Hills community. It will be the only hotel in the development.

Janu has announced several locations planned for future resorts on its website. They include:

  • Aulua, Saudi Arabia (opening 2027)
  • Montenegro (coming soon)
  • Turks & Caicos
  • United Arab Emirates
  • South Korea
  • Portugal
  • Maldives
  • Turkey
  • Thailand

Final Thought

While a stay at Janu might not cost as much as a stay at an Aman resort, it’s still not cheap. The Janu Tokyo hotel shows rates of $1,000 to $1,400 per night. It appears that Aman is attempting to solve two issues with the launch of Janu. Firstly, they are trying to expand into new markets where their current model is not as effective. Secondly, they are looking to lower their price point to attract guests who may not have been willing to pay for an Aman stay in the past. Considering that a night’s stay at Aman can cost between $2,000 to $3,000, Janu’s price seems like a bargain.

About 5 years ago Aman offered “Asia Past and Present’ which was 3 nights at Amansara (Siem Reap, Cambodia) and 3 nights at Amantaka (Luang Prabang, Laos). It was a splurge, at about $7500, but honestly one of the best experiences of my life. I had a private guide and driver for the temples, and they took me WAY out-think Lara Croft, Tomb Raider style, cooking lessons, and they met me at the airport in Cambodia in a 1950s stretch limo that had belonged to the King. Saving my pennies for the next one!
