One important thing to add to your pre-travel checklist is to arrange for your mail and package deliveries to be held while you’re away. I’ve compiled a guide on how to do this using different services, such as USPS, which offers free mail holding, UPS, which charges for the service, and Amazon, which doesn’t hold packages but allows for delivery to alternative locations.
One of these companies has added a new option and, for a change, it’s a customer-friendly move.
FedEx adds vacation hold option
FedEx has added a vacation hold option that allows customers to delay deliveries for up to 14 days. It’s part of the FedEx Delivery Manager, a free service accessible from the FedEx website or app.
If you already have an account, you can access your profile by logging in and going to your profile. If you don’t have an account, you can create one for free.
STEP 1: First, you need to be enrolled in FedEx Delivery Manager. You can sign up for free, or log in if you are already enrolled, to get started today. Once you’re logged in, click on Vacation Hold in your profile. You can also find Vacation Hold under Manage Delivery from one of your shipping notifications.
STEP 2: You can choose a range of dates that line up with your plans. We’ll hold your FedEx Express and FedEx Ground packages for up to 14 days and automatically resume deliveries after your specified end date. Plus, you can download the FedEx Mobile® app to easily schedule a hold anytime, anywhere.
STEP 3: : Make sure everything looks right, then click Confirm. We’ll hold on to your deliveries for up to 14 days.
Final Thought
I’m always surprised when large corporations make customer-friendly changes. While you previously could route deliveries to a FedEx Office location, it’s more convenient to have your packages simply held until you get home. No more worrying about someone stealing your package from your porch or having to get your neighbor to hold it for you.
It’s noteworthy that FedEx now offers free vacation holds, whereas UPS charges per delivery unless you have a paid UPS My Choice account. The downside is that when purchasing items online, you often don’t have the option to choose the delivery service. However, if you can choose the carrier, opting for FedEx might be a better choice, especially if you expect the item to arrive while you’re out of town.
