When it comes to evaluating the value of travel points, the conversation can feel a bit like chasing a moving target. Point valuations constantly shift due to dynamic pricing models, hotel category changes, and various promotions. While it’s widely accepted that a Hilton Honors point hovers around 0.5 cents per point (CPP), this number can fluctuate based on your specific booking. In fact, there are times when you can get more value than that, and others when you get far less. But amidst the noise, there’s one undeniable truth: World of Hyatt consistently offers the best value of any major hotel program.
Point Valuations Across the Web
Different websites provide slightly varying perspectives on the value of a Hyatt point. Here’s a quick look at some of the most notable valuations:
Source | Hyatt Point Value |
---|---|
Nerdwallet | 2.2 CPP |
One Mile at a Time | 1.5 CPP |
Frequent Miler | 1.7 CPP |
Awardwallet | 2.19 CPP |
In my personal experience, Hyatt points have delivered even higher value:
- Hyatt Place: 2.89 CPP
- Grand Hyatt Kauai: 4 CPP
But let me share an example of how great Hyatt points can be.
I booked a stay at a Hyatt Place property in an ideal location. The base room rate was an eye-watering $775 per night, for a Hyatt Place. Yes, you read that right.
What makes the World of Hyatt program stand out is its use of hotel categories to determine point requirements. While the hotel was charging peak rates for this night, this property is classified as a Category 4 hotel, meaning it only cost 18,000 points for a night.
That’s an incredible 4.3 CPP—far above what most other programs offer. Is this an everyday occurrence? Probably not. But this is exactly the kind of redemption that makes Hyatt points stand out. With other hotel programs that use dynamic pricing, you would never see a value like this.
However, there’s a catch. This particular Hyatt is about to move from Category 4 to Category 5 on March 25, 2025, as part of Hyatt’s upcoming category changes. After that, a standard award night will cost 20,000 points, and peak nights will jump to 23,000 points—a 5,000-point increase. While that’s a bummer, even with the devaluation, you’ll still get over 3 CPP—a great deal compared to the competition.
The Bottom Line
Despite Hyatt’s category changes, which sometimes mean higher point requirements, there’s still outsized value in the World of Hyatt program. Whether you’re redeeming points for a budget-friendly stay or splurging on a luxury resort, Hyatt’s use of fixed categories ensures that incredible values like these remain possible—something you won’t often find with other hotel programs.
