When airlines introduce new procedures, or even new options for procedures, it’s rarely in the passengers’ interests. Cases in point:
- Who can forget when that airline lowered its 50 pound max for checked luggage to 40 pounds? (but don’t worry; that’s the same airline that said checked bag fees were good for the environment).
- Alaska Airlines is toying with no longer offering check-in kiosks at the airport (mobile-based self-service bag drops means less maintenance on kiosks and paying less employees).
- Frontier no longer offers a customer service phone line (don’t have to pay for those customer service employees).
However Emirates just introduced a new option for checking and dropping off bags that, yes, will save them money but will also make getting to the airport a lot easier.
Why? Because you’ll be able to check in and drop off your bags, off site, up to 24 hours before take off.
On April 27th, Emirates Airline launched its new City Check-in and Travel Store. It’s in the heart of Dubai’s financial district and is said it’s being done in an effort to make travel more convenient.
The store is located in ICD Brookfield Place in Dubai International Financial Centre (a.k.a. DIFC), about 15 minutes from the airport by car, or about 30 minutes by public transportation.
Travelers can hand over their luggage every day between 8am and 10pm, as long as it’s between four and 24 hours before their flight. Emirates says this will help passengers in a few ways:
- They don’t have to drag their bags to the airport
- Crowding at the airport will be decreased
- They can spend spend less time at the airport, since they don’t have to account for time spent in a check-in line and dropping off bags.
- Passengers will also be able to book future travel at the kiosks
