I will be the first to admit that I am a middle aged woman with the brain of an 10-year-old boy. I still think fart jokes are funny, toilet humor can still make me giggle, you name it. Yep, {mumble} years old and I’m still a fan of sophomoric humor. And apparently I’m not the only one. Read on…
If you’ve visited airports in the past few years, you’ve probably seen Mamava lactation pods. Developed in the early 2010s, the pods are “mini rooms” where people who are still nursing their little ones can either breastfeed or pump in a quiet, private space.
The first Mamava lactation pod was placed in Burlington International Airport (BTV) in 2013 and today there are thousands of them. They can be found in airports, hospitals, schools, offices, sports stadiums, zoos, museums, and military bases in all 50 states, as well as a small handful of locations in other countries (Canada, the Caribbean and France).
FUN FACT! “Mamava” is a Portuguese word that means “nursed” in English.
Mamava pods are free to use. They’re also private spaces that use smart lock-combination keypads and interior deadbolts. To enter an empty pod, you can either use the (free) Mamava app, or press a pre-determined 4-digit code.
Places that have Mamava units are welcome to change the 4-digit code. Or they can continue to use the one that’s pre-programmed into every Mamava pod lock. Our friend Eric H. (he’s the guy who taught himself how to fix broken airport lounge pancake makers) was recently in Hawaii and sent us this photo from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport’s (HNL) Terminal 2:
Can you see it?
Yep, 8008. And if you’re old enough to have used a standalone calculator in your life, you’ll probably remember that 8008 (usually with a 5 at the end) was BOOB(S).
Or if you’re me, you did this:
Dolly Parton was a size 69
(type 69 into a calculator)
The Doctor said, “Dolly, you’re just too, too, too big”
(type 222 into it – 69222)
“I want you to take 51 pills…”
(type 51 – 6922251)
“…for 8 days”
(multiply by 8 – x 8)
And then what was she?
(Turn the calculator upside down, read the numbers as letters and giggle like there’s no tomorrow!)
Anyway, I’ve heard from several nursing parents who say Mamava pods are amazeballs. That set-aside, the shape of their pods (a boob), as well as Mamava’s logo (happy boobs), are both marketing genius. But to use 8008 as their preprogrammed entry code? “Chef’s Kiss” The 10-year-old boy inside this middle-aged woman’s body heartily approves!
Many thanks to Eric H. & Norm J. for their help with this post!
