I Just Bought 300K IHG Points. Am I Crazy?

by joeheg

I feel like I’m alone on this hill but I’m not afraid to say that we’re IHG fans. Well, I’m not going to say that we’re superfans but we do find IHG properties often fit our travel style and we find value in the IHG One Rewards program. Whether we’re using a free night from our IHG One Rewards credit cards or redeeming points, it’s almost always a better value than paying for a room.

IHG has a variety of brands to choose from. No matter if we’re looking for a nicer stay at a Kimpton, Hotel Indigo or Crowne Plaza or a basic room at a Holiday Inn Express or Candlewood Suites, there’s almost always an IHG hotel that serves our needs.

So when I’m able to grab IHG points at a discount, I’m usually a buyer if our account balances are low. I recently drained the remainder of the points we received from a sign-up bonus for the IHG Rewards Premier Mastercard by Chase.

For reference, I spent 129,000 IHG One Rewards points for a hotel room which would have otherwise cost $1,050. That’s a value of 0.8 Cents per Point.

So I don’t feel any shame admitting that I just purchased 300,000 IHG points for $1,500 during the most recent IHG One Rewards flash sale.

Usually, the price to buy IHG points is 1 cent each. While it’s possible to get over 1 CPP value for an IHG point, it’s towards the upper range of value for redemptions. It’s also not a price where I’m not going to be proactively buying points. Fortunately, IHG runs regular sales on purchasing points. The most recent sale was for an 80% discount. Even with that price, I wasn’t a buyer.

The main reason was that I was holding out for a 100% bonus. While it was a flash sale, I was ready to pull the trigger when I saw the email from IHG and purchased 300,000 points for $1,500.

And while I’m saying we purchased 300K points, actually I purchased the points. (Sorry, Sharon. Not Sorry.)

What will we use the points for? I’m not sure at this point. I can add them to the free night certificate from IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card to book any room available with points. I can also use them to stay anywhere from a Holiday Inn Express to one of the Kimpton Key West properties.

Now that we’re traveling more, we need more hotel nights than the ones we get from our credit cards and if I can purchase points we’ll easily use at a discount, I’m not passing up the opportunity.

May I ask what property did you stay at for 129000 points?

I use pretty much all hotel programs pretty regularly but IHG points are the only hotel points I am willing to purchase since I like to have a healthy balance at all times. I get a ton of use out of them and the 4th night free + 10% rebate perks from credit cards make it totally worth it in many cases.
