Mystery of $800K Diamond Ring “Stolen” From Ritz Paris Is Solved

by SharonKurheg

The Ritz Paris is a hotel in central Paris, overlooking the Place Vendôme in the city’s 1st arrondissement. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World marketing group, the Ritz Paris is ranked among the most luxurious hotels in the world.

The Ritz is the most expensive hotel in Paris. Guests have included Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, King Edward VII, and Coco Chanel, among others. Diana, Princess of Wales, and Al-Dodi Al-Fayed, as well as their chauffeur Henri Paul, dined in the Imperial Suite before leaving the hotel with bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones. Minutes later, there was their fatal car accident in the Pont de l’Alma underpass.

So The Ritz Paris has quite the history.

a bedroom with a bed and chairsAccording to a report from France’s Le Parisien newspaper, a woman claimed that her diamond ring worth over $800,000 had been stolen while staying at the Ritz Paris.

The guest, who the publication identified only as a Malaysian businesswoman, said she had just arrived in Paris on Thursday, December 7, 2023.  She decided to do some window shopping around the neighborhood the next day. When she returned to her room, around 11:30 am or so, she claimed that her ring -worth roughly $800,000 – which had been left on her bed stand, was missing.

The woman immediately assumed the ring had been stolen. Had it? Well, who knows? “In these luxury establishments, the honesty of employees is a very sensitive subject,” describes a teacher from a hotel school. Guests are generally very wealthy people who leave items in their rooms that can be worth a fortune. We are so very demanding of probity.”

Hours later, Le Parisien said that she went to a neighborhood police station to report the missing jewelry, and officers then returned with her to the hotel, where they collected evidence and have since opened a preliminary investigation.

The Ritz wasn’t talking, but “All the leads are still to be explored,” said a source close to the investigation. “Everything is possible.” A police team went to the hotel room to try to collect as many elements as possible on site. The Paris public prosecutor’s office had, for the moment, entrusted the file to the police station. “But if we suspect a theft by perpetrated a high-level burglar, the service could be asked and the banditry suppression brigade could take over the case,” adds the same source. We are still talking about colossal damage.”

Fast forward to Sunday, and according to the Ritz, the ring had been found.

The hotel said in a statement, “Thanks to meticulous searches by security agents at the Ritz Paris, the ring was found this morning in a vacuum cleaner bag.”

The newspaper reported the guest had already continued her travels to London but went back to Paris to get her ring (and, I’m sure, apologize profusely for accusing a staff member of stealing it in the first place).

“Our client is happy at the news,” the Ritz said in a statement.
