How Did They Overlook This in the Room Design?

by joeheg

When staying at hotels, there are always little things that can be a nuisance. Some are minor pet peeves, others are legitimate frustrations, and then there are those rare cases where you start wondering if compensation is in order. I’m not quite sure where this one falls.

At first, I couldn’t believe it had actually happened. But by the end, it was just one of those classic SMH moments.

Setting Up to Work… Or So I Thought

As usual, after checking into my hotel, I settled in, maybe unpacked a little, and then got to work setting up my computer. It’s pretty straightforward: find the desk, take out the laptop, connect to Wi-Fi, and plug it in to charge (especially if I used it on the plane).

This hotel had a decent desk area—plenty of space to work. But take a closer look at the picture. Notice anything missing?

No Power Outlet. Seriously.

That’s right—there was no power outlet at the desk.

I searched. First, I checked the desk lamp, thinking maybe there was a hidden outlet on the side. Nope. Then, I looked under the desk.

There was an outlet, but it was already in use. Sure, I could have unplugged the lamp, but then I’d be working in the dark.

Just as I was about to give up—and while taking photos out of sheer disbelief—I spotted something odd.

The Great Outlet Hunt

See that black panel on the side of the TV stand? Yep, that’s where the outlets were hiding. Black on black, completely blending in, in a spot where no one would ever think to look. A little color contrast—beige, white, anything—would have at least made it noticeable.

And while I had finally found an outlet, there was another problem: it was nowhere near the desk. My USB charging cable didn’t even reach. So I had to work unplugged and charge my laptop after I was done.

So congratulations to this hotel—welcome to the Poor Room Design Hall of Fame. Right next to the hotel that put a power outlet smack in the middle of the wall, where no furniture was.

That’s why I always travel with an extension cord. Plus it gives you more outlets.
