As I mentioned in my post about Freiburg, we chose the city primarily as a convenient base for exploring Germany’s Black Forest region.
It offered easy access to the places we wanted to visit while still being a destination worth experiencing in its own right.
Finding a hotel turned out to be more challenging than expected. Freiburg has plenty of lodging options, including several major chain properties, but many of them had surprisingly mediocre reviews. Since we were planning to use the city as our hub for several days, we wanted somewhere comfortable, well-located and practical.
We eventually settled on the Mercure Hotel Freiburg am Münster. While Mercure is part of Accor—a hotel group we don’t often encounter in the United States—the property consistently received positive feedback from guests. It also checked another important box for our road trip: parking. The hotel sits directly above a public parking garage, making it easy to come and go as we explored the Black Forest region.
Although Accor has a limited presence in the U.S., it’s one of the world’s largest hotel companies, so I wasn’t afraid of staying at one of its hotels.
Booking The Mercure Freiburg
We booked two Standard Rooms with double beds (meaning two beds together, not a double bed) for four nights. Since Accor isn’t a chain we stay with frequently, I wasn’t expecting much value from the program, but the member rate provided an immediate benefit.
The reservation also offered flexible cancellation terms, allowing cancellation up to one day before arrival.
Location
The Mercure Hotel Freiburg am Münster is located within easy walking distance of Freiburg’s historic center. The famous Freiburg Münster, shopping areas, restaurants and cafés are all just a short walk away.
For our purposes, the location was ideal. Freiburg served as our home base for exploring the Black Forest, and having direct access to a parking garage beneath the hotel made daily excursions incredibly convenient.
At the same time, we never felt dependent on the car once we returned each evening. Everything we needed was accessible on foot.
Check-In & Lobby
The lobby felt modern and welcoming, with several seating areas that were more stylish than I expected from a midscale city hotel. Check-in was efficient, and the staff we interacted with throughout our stay were friendly and helpful. As was our experience in Germany, speaking English was not an issue.

The Room
We booked Standard Rooms, which turned out to be exactly what we needed for this trip.
European hotel rooms are often smaller than their American counterparts, but the Mercure’s rooms were relatively large and thoughtfully designed. The rooms featured comfortable double beds, a desk area, ample lighting and a television.

The décor was modern without feeling sterile, and the rooms had enough space for us to relax after long days spent exploring the Black Forest.

The rooms also included free Wi-Fi, comfortable seating and functional workspace areas.
Storage
Storage space was adequate for our four-night stay. The room featured an open wardrobe design with shelving, hanging space, a luggage bench and an in-room safe.

While not extensive, it provided enough room to unpack and stay organized during our visit.
Bathroom
The bathroom was modern and efficiently designed.

The walk-in shower had good water pressure and easy-to-understand controls for the rainshower head and handheld. The only negative was the 1/2 shower door. The vanity provided more counter space than we often find in European hotels. Good lighting around the mirror made getting ready in the mornings easy.

While compact, the bathroom never felt overly cramped.
Toiletries
One small surprise was the quality of the toiletries provided. The hotel featured Elemental Herbology products, which felt like a step up from the generic dispensers commonly found at many midrange hotels.

It’s a minor detail, but one that added a slightly more upscale touch to the experience.
Breakfast
The hotel offers a breakfast buffet, but we decided to skip it.
At approximately €25 per person, breakfast felt expensive, especially since the hotel offered only the buffet option, with no lighter alternatives. For our group of four, that would have added more than €100 each morning.
Fortunately, Freiburg offered plenty of better options. Some mornings we visited local cafés, while other times we simply grabbed pastries from the bakery located directly beneath the hotel. Not only did this save money, but it also allowed us to experience more of the local food scene.

Breakfast at Sam’s Cafe in Freiburg
Unless breakfast is included with your rate, I would recommend exploring the nearby alternatives.
The Hotel Bar
The hotel bar was terrible.
We stopped in once and quickly realized it wasn’t somewhere we wanted to spend any time. Fortunately, this wasn’t much of a problem because Freiburg’s city center offers plenty of restaurants, beer gardens and bars within a short walk of the hotel.
If you’re looking for an evening drink, I’d suggest heading into town instead.
Air Conditioning: Something To Be Aware Of
One thing I think the hotel should make clearer is the air conditioning.
Our reservation specifically listed air conditioning as a room amenity. However, during our April stay, the system had been switched off for the season. We discovered that this is apparently common in the region, where the temperate climate means air conditioning is often unnecessary outside the warmer months.
To be fair, the evenings during our stay were actually quite chilly, so most guests probably wouldn’t have required cooling. However, what surprised us was that we couldn’t even use the system’s fan mode to circulate air in the room.
Opening the windows provided enough airflow to keep the room comfortable, but it also let outside noise in.
This wasn’t enough to significantly impact our stay, but I do think hotels advertising air conditioning should clearly state when the system is only operational seasonally. Travelers who prefer sleeping with a fan or who tend to run warm may appreciate knowing this ahead of time.
Parking
For anyone using Freiburg as a base for exploring the Black Forest by car, the parking setup alone makes this hotel worth considering.
The hotel sits directly above a public parking garage, making arrivals and departures extremely easy. We never had to worry about navigating narrow city streets in search of parking or hauling luggage long distances. The hotel offers parking rates, but since we were staying several days, it was more economical to purchase a multi-day pass directly from the garage.
It was one of the features that initially attracted us to the property, and it proved just as convenient as we’d hoped.
Final Thoughts
The Mercure Hotel Freiburg am Münster turned out to be exactly what we needed for this trip.
It wasn’t a luxury experience, nor was that what we were looking for, as we still had our fancy hotels to look forward to later in the trip. Instead, it provided a clean, comfortable room, an excellent location near Freiburg’s historic center, and convenient parking for our Black Forest adventures.
The expensive breakfast, terrible bar and seasonal limitations on the air conditioning prevented the experience from being perfect. However, thanks to Freiburg’s abundance of nearby cafés, restaurants and attractions, none of these issues significantly impacted our trip.
While we don’t often stay at Accor properties, this visit served as a reminder of why the company remains one of the world’s largest hotel groups. If you’re planning to use Freiburg as a base for exploring the Black Forest, the Mercure Hotel Freiburg am Münster is absolutely worth considering.
