In the weeks and months after Labor Day, when the weather starts cooling down in the northeast, vacations to Florida, which stays comparatively warm throughout the winter, start to increase. To keep up with the demand of cars in the Sunshine State, car rental companies have to move a bunch of their autos down to the major cities in Florida, and it’s much more cost effective to have their customers do the transporting that to put them on rail cars and have them shipped down. With that, several companies are offering car rentals from select northeast locations to select Florida locations for just $4.99 per day!
You read that right! Dollar, Hertz and Thrifty are renting Economy through Full-sized cars for upwards to 14 days for a base rate of just $4.99 per day to have you move their car one way from airports up north to ones down south. And nope, they’re not small, quiet, out of the way locations no one’s heard of, either. Take a look:

These rates are only good for one-way transportation, from north to south, so if you’re coming from the northeast you’d have to go back a different way, be it regular car rental prices, flying, taking a bus or train, etc. (or you could just relocate and stay down here, like Joe and I did). Or if you start your trip in Florida (or anywhere), you’ll have to go up north however you wish before renting your car for $5 per day to go to Florida.
Terms and conditions are the same for each company (which makes sense, since Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. owns all three companies):
“Subject to availability, this one-way offer is redeemable in select markets. Base rate includes time and mileage charges only. Taxes, fees, and optional charges are not included. Eligible pick-up airport locations include ALB, and SYR between 9/4/2017 through 12/10/2017; BWI, DCA, IAD, ORF, RIC, BOS, ROA, BTV, BDL, PHL, PIT, PVD, JFK, LGA, EWR, ISP, PWM and HPN between 10/10/2017 through 12/10/2017; and CLT and RDU between 10/23/2017 through 12/10/2017. Eligible drop-off airport locations in Florida include FLL, RSW, JAX, MIA, MCO, SRQ, TLH, TPA, and PBI. The maximum length of keep for this promotion is fourteen (14) days. Offer valid on Economy through Full-size car classes. Not all vehicles, vehicle equipment and services are available at all locations. Age, driver, credit and qualifying rate restrictions for the renting location apply. Advance reservation required. Offer not valid and rate change or additional fees may apply in the event of reservation modification, early / late vehicle return. Offer has no cash value, and may not be used with other discounts, promotions or special rates. Limited quantities available. Subject to blackout periods and additional restrictions.”
Although the offers say they’re good through December 10, I’m sure they could be pulled once each rental car company has enough cars relocated to Florida. So if you’re serious about taking them up on their offer, it’s probably better to make your reservation more sooner than later.
