Are These The 100 Most Interesting Places To Go and Things To Do In the Next 12 Months?

by SharonKurheg

Sometimes when people travel, they have a set destination in mind. Other times they need a little inspiration – they may check out all those influencers on Instagram, or ask for advice and opinions on a travel themed Facebook like ours.

However, Wonderlust, a relatively new (less than 2 years old) aspirational online travel publication founded by Bob Guccione, Jr., could be the latest thing to potentially help with you the questions of, “Where should I go next?” and “What should I do?” They’ve just come out with their list of the 100 most interesting places to go (or as they describe it, the most “fascinating, absorbing, extraordinary, beautiful and sometimes startling places and suggestions of experiences to have.”) and although some of them definitely sound visit-worthy, others I’m just kind of scratching my head.

I won’t post all 100 places because that would be craziness when you can just go to their page to see the whole list. But here’s a sampling, as well as the Top Ten.

Click on any for a brief description

100. Naoshima, the island of art, Japan
90. Le Sentierdu Littoral, Cap d’Antibes, France
80. Ninety Mile Beach, North Island, New Zealand
70. Kashmir, India
60. Kurdistan, Northern Iraq
50. Sao Tome &Principe
40. Kitesurfing in Union Island, Grenadines
30. Falconry lessons at Gleneagles, Scotland
20. Castiglion del Bosco, Montalcino, Italy
14. Staten Island, New York (I’m just adding this one of theirs to my list here because I lived on Staten Island for almost 25 years. And although the rest of the other things to do on the island are OK, they’re absolutely right about Jade Island & their amazing spare ribs)
10. Pristina, Kosovo
9. The International Space Station, Space
8. Dali, Yunnan province, China
7. Pumphouse, Lake St. Clair, Tasmania
6. The Empty Quarter, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen
5. Boston, Massachusetts
4. Swing at the end of the world, Banos, Ecuador
3. La Frateria, Il Convento Di San Francesco, Cetona, Italy
2. Iraq al Amir women’s cooperative, Amman, Jordan
1. Kakslauttanen, Saariselka, Finland (this place is actually on my bucket list! We almost went last year but plans didn’t work out One of these days)

Here’s the whole list of 100 places.

My Thoughts

I had never heard of Wonderlust before, but since it’s online and relatively new, that’s not super surprising. The only reason I even saw it now was because the Staten Island Advance, the newspaper I grew up with and still read online, had an article about the Island being #14.

I did think the list was a little on the eclectic side. It jumped around from whole cities to beaches to restaurants to a sauna in an airport (#84) and even to space travel (#9). I got the impression that the list (and, I suspect the entire publication) is generally geared towards wealthier people, but then they’d throw in something decidedly not, like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (#67) in Orlando, or Dollywood in Tennessee (#82). Not that wealthy people don’t like theme parks – far from it, I’m sure – but to throw those in among exclusive experiences in Indonesia and Tasmania? Just…weird.

But anyway, that’s the list. Personally, I’ve been to 4 of the 100 (although Staten Island wasn’t for traveling LOL) and maybe it was just me, but there wasn’t a whole lot on the list that I would consider “the most interesting places or things to do.” But I guess it’s one of those Your Mileage May Vary sort of things.
