Citi Makes The First Move To Capture Stay At Home Spending

by joeheg

I bet that most of you are reading from home. We’re all spending more time inside than we usually do and I’m sure there are some things you need. A person has to eat and food delivery services are busier than ever. You might also need new sweatpants or pajamas after wearing your old pair out while doing your job and staying put. Maybe it’s necessities you need, like your prescription or just something from a drugstore. It might also be a good idea to get some new technology to make you look your best while on all of those group video chats.

There’s one place you’re going to be shopping and it’s not the store, but online.

In response to this shift, Citi’s launched a promotion giving you bonus points for using their cards for online shopping.

While the previous goal was for banks to get their credit card to the top of your wallet, the new wallet banks need to get into is your digital one. This (targeted) promo is a good one to accomplish that task.

I received an email today for my Citi Rewards+ card.

Use your card to earn 10 ThankYou® Points per $1 spent, up to 2,500 points, through 04/30/2020 on eligible purchases¹ you make online.

Here are a few examples of some online purchases:

  • Eligible purchases made at your favorite retailer’s website
  • Restaurant delivery orders
  • Online drugstore orders (Including prescription orders made online)

Offer excludes gas station and supermarket purchases.

Don’t forget, your Citi Rewards+SM Card rounds up to the nearest 10 points on every purchase!

This is a very limited time offer, only lasting until the end of April. This promo has the normal Citi-speak rules that you can earn up to 2,500 bonus points. It’s easy to think that spending $250 will max out our bonus but read close.

Earnings associated with this program will equal 9 bonus ThankYou® Point(s) per $1 spent on eligible purchases and may overlap with other special offers in which you are currently enrolled. Bonus points awarded with this offer are subject to a maximum of 2,500 additional points

You need to spend $277 to earn 2,500 EXTRA points since you’ll already be earning 1 point per dollar for your regular spending.

There’s no mention of what qualifies as online spending and since purchases count for other Citi cards that bonus in that category, I’d expect purchases from them will work for this as well.

Final Thoughts

This is a targeted offer but it isn’t limited to the Rewards+ card. Keep an eye out on your email on for all of your Citi cards. Will Run For Miles reports getting the offer for a Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card and a reader of Frequent Miler got the offer on the Citi Dividend card.

This is a nimble move from Citi. Offers often take $1,000 or more to max out but this one is less than $300. They’re sending it to their no-annual-fee cards instead of the premium ones and letting you use it to purchase anything you need online.

While people aren’t thinking about spending extravagant amounts, there are still things you need even in uncertain times. Citi’s hoping you’ll use their cards for those purchases and continue to use it after April is done.

I got this offer on a Citi Executive card, so it’s premium cards too.
