The 2019 Novel Coronavirus continues to put a damper on travel, and although that’s being felt all over the world, it’s having a particularly awful effect on Las Vegas.
According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, although the weekend occupancy rate in Las Vegas was about 66.1% in September, the weekday occupancy rate was only 38.5%. Part of that is due to a dramatic decrease in conventions and other big events. But whatever the reasons, multiple Las Vegas hotels and even one casino have closed their doors on weekdays:
- The Palazzo, Park MGM, the LINQ and Planet Hollywood hotels only accept guests on weekends.
- Encore has closed its hotel and casino on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
- Effective Nov. 30th, the hotels at the Mirage and Mandalay Bay will close Mondays at noon and reopen Thursdays at noon.
- Off the Strip, the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino still hasn’t opened. It finally will on December 22, but after the first of the year, it will only accept weekend reservations at the hotel.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, COVID cases in Nevada are in the midst of a huge surge. So effective today, Las Vegas, Reno, and the rest of Nevada will be under tighter restrictions for the next 3 weeks, thanks to a mandate from Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak.
Specific to tourism and entertainment, they have gone from 50% capacity to 25% capacity at casinos, arcades, museums, art galleries, aquariums, zoos, libraries, bowling alleys, racetracks, miniature golf, amusement and theme parks. Restaurants and bars are also limited to 25% capacity, and reservations are required. Also, there can be no more than 4 customers at a table. All sports tournaments are also on pause.

Said Sisolak: “We are on a rapid trajectory that threatens to overwhelm our health care system, our frontline health workers, and your access to care. So it’s time to act.”
