Several New Flight Routes Announced In UK and US

by joeheg

On the surface, it seems counterintuitive for an airline to start flying between two cities while we’re still in the middle of a global pandemic and travel restrictions are still in place. But with vaccines getting approval for use and hope at the end of this tunnel, airlines are starting to make future plans.

Normally, there are many things that keep airlines from announcing a new route. The travel slowdown due to the coronavirus has removed most of those barriers so airlines are taking advantage of what will hopefully be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Airlines in the United Kingdom were already in trouble before coronavirus. Thomas Cook declared bankruptcy in October 2019. Flybe did the same in March 2020, claiming it was because of the pandemic. The loss of these two airlines created a lack of flights from airports around the country and the airlines that are left are planning to jump in.

For people in England looking to plan a summer holiday, British Airways subsidiary BA CityFlyer will be flying to 11 European destinations from Southampton.  Aer Lingus will also start flights this summer between Manchester and Boston, New York and Orlando.

US residents are also seeing airlines announce new routes on a regular basis. Southwest had already announced it would start flying from Houston Bush (IAH) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD) Airports but we now know where those flights will be going.

A new international route was also announced by Qatar, which will begin flights between Doha and Seattle on March 15, 2021.

As travel slowly recovers, we’ll have to see if the routes added back to the airline schedules will be the same as they were or if airlines will continue to announce new routes. Only time will tell us the answer.
