Iceland Keeps Loosening COVID Restrictions, Just In Time For Our Trip

by joeheg

When Iceland announced they would welcome fully vaccinated guests without the need for quarantine, Sharon and I decided that a visit there would be a satisfactory replacement for our Virgin Cruise that was postponed for the second time.

Thanks to our readers’ suggestions and some help from Andy from Andy’s Travel Blog, we decided on what areas we wanted to visit on our trip and booked hotels and a rental car.

Iceland announced that starting July 1st, fully vaccinated visitors would no longer have to take a COVID test upon arrival. While we weren’t worried about this requirement, it was one less thing to do when we arrived.

As the trip approached, Iceland has steadily improved vaccinating its citizens. As of the writing of this post, about 50% of the population is fully vaccinated and 72% have received at least one shot. When you consider only adults, 87% have received at least one dose. Over the past 7 days, the country has averaged 5 daily infections per 100K people.

With the country doing such a good job protecting the population, Iceland has taken another step and is loosening restrictions within the country.  As of June 26th, social distancing, limits on gatherings, mask-wearing, limits on opening hours are all removed.

In other words, Iceland is going back to the way things were before COVID. No having to stand 2 meters from everyone. Bars and restaurants can go back to normal; the same for museums and other activities.

For us, that means once we get off the plane from New York (where we’re still required to wear masks on the plane), it’s masks off. Am I the only one who will have to remember how to smile for a selfie, not just with my eyes?
