When you think of hotels or motels – be they Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, IHG, Choice, a mom & pop place, or what have you – I’m betting you always think of a solid building. That’s how hotels have always been; they stay in one spot.
Not anymore.
The world’s first hotel on wheels is getting ready to debut in Kingston, New York, in the state’s Hudson Valley this winter.
The New York-based startup company behind this creative idea is Moliving Inc. The company thinks that movable luxury hotel rooms, which are designed to be easily installed and relocated, will offer hoteliers the possibility to build hotels faster and more sustainably. And as an added bonus, they’ll be able to adjust their room inventory based on seasonal demand.”The traditional hotel development model has proven its success for generations. Now, lifestyle habits and travel behaviors have greatly shifted. We are spearheading the change with our mobile units and proprietary technology to continue to adapt,” said Jordan Bem, Moliving’s founder and CEO, in a press release.
Moliving’s first hotel is named Hurley House. The “luxury eco-resort” will have 60 units and is scheduled to open in Kingston this winter.
Moliving revealed their first model unit earlier this year. Each one is 45 feet long and offers about 400 square feet of interior space. They also each have two decks, one at each end. The rooms have a modern style, with wooden elements and natural earth tones. Each unit also has floor-to-ceiling windows and a skylight, to provide for both natural light and excellent outdoor views.
The bed can be offered as one king-sized bed or two twin-sized, and can be easily converted between the two. All units have amenities such as a smart TV, wireless speaker, USB ports, in-room safe, private bar, electronically controlled shades and Wi-Fi.Each unit is built on a custom-designed base. They can be standalone rooms or grouped together to create multi-level units. Either way, the rooms are made of recycled and eco-friendly materials, and the units can be either in an “off the grid” setting or hooked up to the host property in minutes.
Following its debut in Kingston, Moliving plans to expand to other East Coast locations in 2022 (they’re currently looking at The Hamptons, Nantucket, Hilton Head and Miami). Other future domestic locations may include Joshua Tree, Lake Tahoe, Sonoma and Vail. International locations are being considered in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
