Clarifying A Common Misconception About Delta Digital ID

by SharonKurheg

Delta’s Digital ID program isn’t new. They’ve been using it in Atlanta and Detroi,t as an alternative to Clear, since 2021. It’s a Delta-specific option for SkyMiles members who also have TSA Precheck and a passport. In order to use it, you also have to be flying with Delta and have the Delta app on your phone.

Delta must have found that passengers like this option as they’ve expanded the service to hubs in Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK and LaGuardia Airports)

While I was conducting research for my post on expanding the Digital ID program, I noticed a common misunderstanding that I’d like to clarify. Many individuals appear to be mistaking the Delta Digital ID program for a digital driver’s license. In reality, these two programs are entirely unrelated. You don’t need a digital drivers license to sign up for the Delta Digital ID. This program is designed to streamline the airport security process by allowing you to verify your identity using facial recognition technology.

My first introduction to the program was when I was in the Clear line at Atlanta airport, which was the longest line for Clear I’d ever seen. A Delta agent stood in the TSA Precheck line and asked if any passengers had a Delta Digital ID. The few who did were pulled from the queue into a separate line with no wait.

I wasn’t able to use the service as I wasn’t flying with Delta that day. However, Eye of the Flyer recently was able to use the service in LAX and LGA and calls it a “game changer.”

It’s sort of a hybrid of CLEAR and TSA PreCheck.

But way better. Like, it’s stunning. Put away your boarding passes and cell phones.

The service will next be introduced to Atlanta’s International Terminal, with other locations planned for 2024.

Offering services like this is part of the reason we ranked Delta our #1 airline.

It’s not just Delta or just the security line. Delta and United now have TSA PreCheck Touchless ID bag drop!
