I grew up near Newark Airport and spent some time in Tampa, FL before settling down in Orlando. I have never known what it’s like to live far away from a major airport. The sound of planes flying overhead has been a constant presence throughout my life. However, that’s not the reality for many people living in the United States. For people living in rural areas, getting to a major airport often involves a long drive to a regional airport where they can catch a connecting flight to their final destination.
In fact, it’s not only just those living in rural areas where it’s difficult to find flights. Unless you’re near a major airline hub city, flights may be few and far between. That’s why we’ve seen a number of smaller airlines jump to service these less popular airports.
At first, it was Allegiant and Sun Country, but now there are newer players in the market, including Avelo Airlines. The airline started service in 2021, providing flights from Burbank, CA, to underserviced cities in the Western US. Shortly thereafter, Avelo announced that it would begin offering flights from a new base in New Haven, CT. Previously, there were no commercial flights from Tweed New Haven Airport. The only other commercial airport in Connecticut is Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks, which is quite a distance away and closer to Massachassuets than it is to the NY/CT area.
Still, it is a bit surprising that Avelo announced that it is expanding its service from Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) to four additional cities, including the busiest airport in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL).
Service between HVN and ATL will begin on May 2nd and operate four times weekly on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays with fares as low as $72.
Avelo Airlines will only fly to New Haven, CT, from Atlanta. This means that if you want to catch a connecting flight, you will need to switch to a different airline. Additionally, due to the limited flight schedule, these flights are more suited for leisure travel rather than business travel.
But Avelo does now offer 21 non-stop destinations from New Haven, CT which makes it the only player for those looking for an easy way to get from parts of New York and Connecticut to destinations on the Eastern Seaboard.

The expansion puzzles me a bit as well, particularly Knoxville.
