Visiting Fox Bros: The BBQ Served on Delta Flights

by joeheg

During our trip to Atlanta, we wanted to explore the city a bit. When it was time to look for dinner, we searched nearby restaurants. I hadn’t done any research ahead of time, but I knew there were lots of options. Since we hadn’t made any reservations, our choices were limited. We were dressed casually in jeans and T-shirts, so we wanted to avoid any fancy places. To make it a bit more challenging, it was rush hour—but when is it not busy on Atlanta’s roads? We decided to look for a spot on the city’s west side since we were leaving the World of Coke.

That’s when I saw a name I recognizedFox Bros. Bar-B-Q. That’s the place that makes the barbeque entrees for Delta Air Lines, which are served on first-class flights from Atlanta.

We’ve never tried their smoked short ribs or chicken salad, but we’re never ones who pass up good barbecue. We weren’t sure it would live up to Texas barbecue, but Fox Bros. was just named the #4 barbeque in Atlanta, so it had to be pretty good. Spoiler: it was way better than pretty good.

Instead of going to the original location on Dekalb Ave., we opted for the new location in The Works complex on the Upper West Side because it’s bigger and has free parking. The Fox Bros. location is almost too new and clean to be a legitimate barbecue joint. Don’t let the new building fool you; they’re turning out quality food from the on-site wood-burning smokers.

We arrived between the lunch and dinner crowd, so the dining room was mostly empty. There were also outside tables, but it was overcast with a slight drizzle, so we opted to dine inside.

The menu was standard barbecue fare, with meats, sandwiches and sides making up most of the selections.

I went with the brisket and turkey combo plate with sides of mac & cheese and collards.

Sharon ordered a 1/2 rack of spare ribs with mac & cheese and Frito pie.

While we were doubtful that anyone outside of Texas could come close to matching what we’ve eaten there, we were thoroughly impressed with our Fox. Bros meals. We were sad we didn’t plan to bring food home (we’ve perfected the method to do that), as we would have picked up some ribs, sausage and brisket.

Final thought

If you’re in Atlanta and want Texas-style barbecue, stop by one of the Fox. Bros locations. Or, if you’re flying in the front seats of a Delta plane leaving Atlanta, one of the Fox Bros. entree selections (which vary from time to time) might be the best entree choice.

Wow…. totally not the Fox Brothers I remember living next to on DeKalb… People used to park in front of my house (and the fire hydrant there). Always was a fun Friday/Saturday evening game for me and neighbors to sit on our porches with a drink, call Fox Brothers, and tell them whatever customer in (insert car here) has 5 minutes to move their car or we’re having it towed.
