Over the years, I’ve shared my – hatred? Hatred’s a strong word – intense dislike for Southwest’s Live at 35 program.
Introduced in 2011, Live at 35 is when Southwest Airlines schedules a concert on a flight. They’re not announced ahead of time so, um, SURPRISE!
The shows continued on, like occasional pop-up concerts, for years. They stopped during the pandemic (YAY!). However, alas, they brought them back last year and apparently had one as recently as just a few weeks ago. So “hello, intrusive!”, and my fingers are crossed I’m never, ever on one of these flights.
I just discovered that United apparently saw what Southwest has been doing and said, “Hold my beer.”
Actually, it’s not fair to say that because it wasn’t United per se that set up an impromptu concert, it was one of their flight attendants.
Yep, it was a flight attendant. The flight, which happened last August, was going from Scotland to Chicago and Nic the FA decided to get everyone in the mood with rousing bagpipe renditions of Flower of Scotland and Scotland the Brave.
Here’s a video of the momentous occasion:
The video was also posted on TikTok by someone who seemed to be Nic’s fellow FA, Alex, who was working that flight.
Alex says that Nic is a professional bagpipe player (and he was even recognized by someone he knows in Tampa!). He explained, in response to some of the comments on TikTok, that Nic did the mini concert before landing, when they had to pass out documentation. There were 2 babies on board and Alex kind of “warned” the parents ahead of time, so the babies wouldn’t be startled.
Comments ranged from being either very negative…
