Changes to Chase DoorDash Benefits for Cardholders

by joeheg

Chase cardholders have enjoyed various benefits from DoorDash since 2022, which vary depending on the type of Chase card held. Co-branded Chase cardholders are entitled to 12 months of complimentary DashPass, while Slate and Freedom cardholders receive three free months along with a discount on the renewal fee. Premium Chase cards like the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, and JP Morgan Reserve also provide free DashPass access. Additionally, Sapphire Reserve and JP Morgan Reserve members benefit from a monthly $5 credit for DoorDash, which can be accumulated for up to three months before it expires. Recently, Chase cardholders got some updates on the DoorDash benefits, and there are a few things worth noting.

DashPass Extension

Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve and JP Morgan Reserve cardholders now receive free DashPass through 12/31/2027 or a minimum of one year if activated between 1/1/27 and 12/31/27. Previously, the benefit was due to expire at the end of 2024.

Non-restaurant Promo

Starting in August 2024, Sapphire Reserve and JP Morgan Reserve members will receive two $10 monthly promotional credits for non-restaurant orders. These credits must be added to your order before checking out, so make sure to add them if you’re ordering groceries or other non-restaurant items. Only one $10 promo can be added to an order.

Sapphire Preferred members receive one $10 promo per month.

Changes to the DoorDash Credit

The last change is the most confusing of the three. Here’s how DoorDash describes it in their email.

Your Sapphire Reserve or J.P. Morgan Reserve DashPass by DoorDash monthly $5 credit has been extended by 1 month, through 1/3‌1/25.

Starting 2/1‌/25, you’ll receive a new $5 monthly promotion in the DoorDash app, which you can apply at checkout each month toward any restaurant order.

One way to interpret this is that you’ll receive the current monthly credit until 1/31/25. This credit can be applied to any DoorDash order. Starting 2/1/25, this will change to a $5 monthly promotion, which is only good on a restaurant order. This is how they describe the benefits as of February 2025.

  • 2/1‌/25 – 12/31‌/27: $5 monthly promo on restaurant orders
  • 8/1‌/24 – 12/31‌/27: Two $10 monthly promos on grocery or retail orders

However, it’s reasonable to think that the change of wording for the $5 DoorDash benefit from “Monthly Credit” to “Monthly Promo” means that it will no longer be possible to store the $5 for up to 3 months, as pointed out by Doctor of Credit.

This situation may arise from DoorDash being overly clever in its phrasing of the benefit terms. The updated FAQ regarding the DoorDash benefits still states that the benefit can be carried over for two months.

  • If the credit is not used within the calendar month, it will be carried over for a maximum of 2 months.

  • Up to $15 in credit can be accrued before a $5 credit expires.

This website has been recently updated with new benefits, so I’m uncertain if they overlooked removing this part of the benefit or if it’s genuinely going away.

Final Thought

Chase and DoorDash are extending their partnership through at least 2027. Sapphire Reserve cardholders will still receive $5 monthly towards restaurant orders, but it’s still unclear if those benefits can be carried over for two months or if they will become a “use it or lose it” promotion.

The addition of a $10 to $20 monthly discount on non-grocery items distinguishes dining and non-restaurant orders and explains when each benefit can be used.
